San Diego Locations to Visit with Your Family for an Enjoyable Vacation

Reasons to Visit San Diego Time After Time

Kristen Wilkerson
To me, San Diego is the ultimate vacation destination. The city avails itself of many features popular to visitors, making it easy to tailor a vacation to a family's interests. This article discusses some of the reasons this author enjoys visiting San Diego, highlighting city features in the process.

Tourists often seek out beaches in coastal cities hoping to relax, hear the waves, or work on their tan. Downtown San Diego's coastline is primarily occupied by other things including shops and aircraft carriers, but there are many beaches to be found in the area. To reach our favorite beach destination, our family typically heads south over the Coronado Bridge to Coronado Island.

Home of the famous Hotel del Coronado, the island's south side hosts a splendid public beach. On a clear day, beach goers can look to the south and see Tijuana. Those with dogs can frequent the west end of the beach and play fetch with their pets in the ocean. The best part of this beach, however, is it appears as if millions of golden flecks tickle your toes. I am not sure what causes these golden flecks, but the sun reflecting off them certainly would have made me believe that gold was in the area if I had been the explorer Coronado. I am positive there is a further story to be told about these golden flakes in the sand, and I look forward to hearing the story in your comments.

Another San Diego destination is Balboa Park. Housing the San Diego Zoo, the lush, green Balboa Park is free to use. It contains many varieties of leisure activities including lawn bowling, open spaces for picnics, and an off-leash dog park. In one section of Balboa Park, historical buildings have been transformed into 14 various museums as well.

Finally, with kids in our family, we search for a variety of theme parks and sporting events for entertainment. The San Diego area is home to many such venues. These include Sea World, the San Diego Zoo, Legoland, and teams such as the San Diego Chargers professional football team and the San Diego Padres baseball team.

Whether getting around San Diego via the trolley or horse drawn carriage, shopping at Seaport Village, eating dinner on the U.S.S. Midway, or exploring the Gaslamp Quarter, San Diego offers families of all types an interesting vacation destination.
