San Francisco 49ers' 2009 Draft Grade: A-/B+

Mike Singletary's First Draft as 49ers Head Coach is a Good One

The San Francisco 49ers addressed one of their biggest needs, wide receiver, with their 1st round pick, selecting Texas Tech's Michael Crabtree with the 10th pick in the draft. Crabtree, arguably the best receiver in the draft, gives the 49ers anemic offense a much needed weapon for whomever quarterbacks the team. Isaac Bruce the consummate pro, will be a great mentor for Crabtree. Isaac Bruce has had a great NFL career and has always maintained dignity and respect for his team and the game. The 49ers traded their second and fourth round picks this year, for a 1st round pick in 2010.

In the third round, San Francisco selected a running back, Glenn Coffee from Alabama. Coffee is a tough player, who should fit into the Singletary style of smash mouth football. Ideally Coffee will be a good compliment to Frank Gore and spell him for about 10 carries a game.

The 49ers third pick was Scott McKillop from the University of Pittsburgh. McKillop is an active, physical linebacker who was named Big East Defensive player of the year in 2008. Teaming with Patrick Willis, McKillop could provide the 49ers with a formidable linebacker combination. McKillop will benefit from Patrick Willis and Coach Singletary.

San Francisco's second pick in the 5th round was, Nate Davis the quarterback out of Ball State. The 49ers have two young QB's Alex Smith and Shaun Hill battling for the starting job. San Francisco also brought in veteran quarterback Damon Huard. Davis will most likely spend the 2009 season on the practice squad.

Bear Pascoe a local product out of Fresno State, was selected by San Francisco in the 6th round. Pascoe isn't the pass catching tight end that current 49er, Vernon Davis is, but he can make difficult catches. Pascoe will compete with the other San Francisco tight ends to make the roster.

The final two picks were both from LSU. Curtis Taylor the safety and Ricky Jean Francois, defensive tackle. San Francisco can always use secondary help, especially playing in the NFC West against Arizona, Seattle and the Rams, all teams that love to pass. A defensive tackle that can get some pressure on the QB is also a need.

Mike Singletary's first draft as head coach of the San Francisco 49ers was a good one. The 49ers got their receiver, got a good, very productive linebacker and obtained a 1st round pick in the 2010 draft. I'd give the 49ers an A-. The only issue I have with the 49ers draft, is the same issue I've had for years with the 49ers, I would've liked to see them draft some offensive line help, hopefully Marvel Smith will remain healthy.

If you are going to write an article about a team's draft, you might try to get the school where their 1st pick from right...Crabtree was at Texas Tech, not Virginia Tech.
