San Francisco, California day trips: The Filoli Mansion and Gardens

The Filoli Mansion and Gardens covers 654 acres of lush landscape on the San Francisco Peninsula. The name is derived from the first two letters of each word in the initial owner's motto of "Fight, Love, and Live." The Filoli mansion itself is also a popular San Francisco, California attraction. It was used as the setting for the movie "Heaven Can Wait" and the television series "Dynasty." The Filoli Mansion and Gardens is now held as the property of the National Trust for Historic Preservation.

San Francisco, California day trips: Thomas Fogarty Winery

Thomas Fogarty Winery is located on the ridge of the Santa Cruz Mountains. The drive into the winery takes you through a breathtaking redwood forest. The winery uses eight local grape varieties to produce its delicious array of wines. Wine tasting packages are available for visitors on this San Francisco day trip. The wine bar features an amazing view of the Silicon Valley below. There is a small wine tasting fee of $6 or $10, depending on whether you choose the premium wines or just the standard selection. While you are enjoying your wine tasting, you will also be treated to firsthand stories from local wine experts. The winery's owner, Thomas Fogarty participates in this story telling on occasion.

San Francisco, California day trips: Stanford University

If you do not mind taking a short drive, consider visiting Palo Alto and Stanford University. From the San Francisco Peninsula, head south on the winding highway through the mountains until you reach the Stanford campus. Walking tours are given by the students at 3:15 each day. While on campus, visit the Cantor Arts Center for performances or current exhibits. Slightly north of campus is the expansive Stanford Shopping Center, where you can find a deal at one of their outlet shops.

San Francisco, California day trips: Hewlett Packard's garage

Besides Stanford University, Palo Alto also has a couple of other interesting sights to see on your San Francisco day trip. The original Hewlett Packard garage is located in downtown Palo Alto. This is where William Hewlett and David Packard first built the products that gave the company its start. You can also visit the Gamble Gardens at the Procter & Gamble company headquarters.
