San Francisco Giants Postseason History

Since moving to San Francisco from New York in 1958, the Giants have qualified for the postseason on eight different occasions. Here is a look at the San Francisco Giants postseason history.

1962. The San Francisco Giants finish the regular season tied with the Los Angeles Dodgers for first place in the National League. The two teams play a three game playoff to determine who will represent the National League in the World Series. The Giants would win the pennant by defeating the Dodgers two games to one in the playoff. They won the third game by a score of 6 to 4. The Giants advance to the World Series against the New York Yankees. The series would be extended to a seventh game. The Yankees would win game seven by a score 1 to 0. The Giants have the tieing and winning run on base in the bottom of the ninth inning but Willie McCovey lines out to second base to the end the series and give the Yankees the World Series title.

1971. The San Francisco Giants won the 1971 National League Western Division title to advance to the postseason. The Giants would play the Pittsburgh Pirates in the League Championship Series. The Giants would win game one by a score of 5 to 4. But the Pirates would win the next three to win the series three games to one.

1987. The Giants win their first division title since 1971 and play the St Louis Cardinals in the League Championship Series. The Giants would take a three games to 2 series lead and need just one more win to advance to their first World Series since 1962. But the Cardinals would shut out the Giants in games six and seven to win the National League Pennant in seven games.

1989. The Giants win the Western Division Title again in 1989. This time they face the Chicago Cubs in the National League Championship Series. The two teams split the first two games in Chicago, but the Giants would return to San Francisco and win he next three games to win the series in five games. The Giants win their first National League Pennant since 1962.

The San Francisco Giants would play the Oakland A's in the World Series. The A's would win the first two games of the series in Oakland. Just before game three of the series an earthquake would hit San Francisco and the series would be delayed for ten days. When the series resumed the A's easily win the next two games to sweep the Giants and win the series.

1997. The Giants won the National League Western Division Title in 1997 to advance to the playoffs. The Giants face the Florida Marlins in the Divisional Playoff round and are swept in thee games by the Marlins.

2000. The Giants once again win the Western Division Title in 2000. San Francisco would play the New York Mets in the first round. The Giants won the first game but the Mets would win the next three games to win the series in four games.

2002. The San Francisco qualify for the 2002 postseason by winning the National League Wild Card. The Giants play the Atlanta Braves in the first round of the playoffs. The Braves take a two games to one series lead, but the Giants win the next two games to win the series three games to two. The Giants would face the St Louis Cardinals in the National League Championship Series. The Giants win the series in five games to capture the National League Pennant. The Giants advance to their third World Series since moving to San Francisco.

The Giants face the Anaheim Angels in the World Series. The two teams split the first four games of the series. The Giants would win game five by a score of 16 to 4 to take a three game to two series lead. In game six The Giants have a 5 - 0 lead in the seventh inning, but the Angels rally to score three runs in the seventh and three runs in the eighth to win the game and force a games seven. The Angels win game seven by a score of 4 - 1 to capture the World Series title.

2003. The Giants qualify for the 2003 postseason when they win the National League Western Division title. The Giants would play there Florida Marlins in the first round,. The Giants win game one but the Marlins would win the next three to take the series in four games.
