Sanctions on the Imagine-Nation

A Listener's Response to NPR Report

AD
Alix Spiegel's report entitled "Old-Fashioned Play Builds Serious Skills" cast a light on an over-looked problem in our nation's school curriculums. With increasing budget cuts and a growing emphasis on test scores, schools are responding by trimming their budgets's perceived fat. As a writer and a performer, my job is to use the very skills many schools have stopped teaching all together. It saddens me to think that art, music, and now even a most basic human function- make believe- are being so easily dismissed. So greatly undervalued and under funded. But then again we want our children to do well on the SAT's and the GRE's- they are our nation's future. Who needs daydreamers, make-believers, or out-of-the-box thinkers? What good every came from those kind of people.
