I love using sand to make craft projects. It is an easy and free source for adding a beach touch to your home decor.
This simple candle votive made out of Sand and a glass candle votive is a simple project that is great for both kids and adults. While I recommend adult supervision while the candle is lit, there is no reason the kids can't help make this fun craft project.
These simple Sand Candle Votives and luminaries are perfect for decorating the kitchen table, the coffee table, or even as gifts for the grandparents and other family members.
You can make this simple craft project in less than an hour. Just be sure to add in the time for drying and you should be fine.
To Make These Simple Sand Candle Votives You Will Need:
Empty Jars or Glass Candle Votives
Decoupage
Sand
Paintbrushes
Scissors
Candles
Tissue Paper, Constructing Paper, or paint (optional)
The first step is to paint a coat of decoupage on the outside of the candle votive or clear glass jar.
Now, pour some of your sand into a large flat pan. Roll the candle votive in the beach sand.
Now, let this dry.
After this first coat of sand dries you can paint on another coat of decoupage and then roll the candle votive in the sand again.
Repeat this step until the entire glass candle votive is completely coated in sand.
You can do light coats to make the sand sheer and translucent or do alto of coats to make solid sand.
Tips:
I like to use old pickle jars and spaghetti jars for this craft project. They are just the right shape to hold a pillar candle.
You can use hot glue to add sea shells, flat sea shells, and sand dollar to the surface of the beach themed candle votive.
For some color you can take your acrylic paint. Pour some into the glass jar and start swirling it around to coat the inside. Once the inside is coated you can pour out any excess. Let this dry. Now, start the sand coating process as described at the beginning of this article.
You can tie it off in a beautiful bow that matches your wedding colors as well. Any kind of ribbon will do
You can also use glittery sand that you buy at the arts and craft store.
If you are using these simple sand coated candle votives at your wedding be sure to keep in mind what color sand is indicative to that area. You will find some location with soft white sand, brown sand, and even rocky sand.
Now, place the candle inside. Be sure to set on a flat and stable surface before you light the candle.
Tips:
The decoupage will dry clear; so do not worry about how it looks going on.
Be sure to buy a candle that fits loosely into your jar. You want at least 1 to 2 inches of space between the jar.
For added emphasis try placing the candleholder on a round piece of beveled glass. This will add some more shimmer and shine to your wedding reception, family room, or beach house.
