Sandra Bernhard Live in Concert at Prelude by Barton G. January 29, 2011 at the Adrienne Arsht Center, Miami Fl
Forging on she shared her experience of staying in Miami at the Villa this week and her surprise of a Cuban/Jewish wedding in the lobby. That was a good ten minutes of material all on its own. Of course she was thankful to be in the Sunshine state, '˜slow at is, drunk as we are' according to the New York resident. After all, N.Y.C. as we speak is blanketed in two feet of snow with twenty feet snow banks throughout the state. Moving on to being born in Michigan, growing up in Arizona and moving her mother from Sandra's childhood home and the drama which ensued. It was good for a laugh especially since most people can relate to the big '˜moves' in their lives and losing the places they grew up in. Time for the dish part of the show. Taking the bull by the horns and shooting barbs at Joan Rivers for being '˜that desperate for money and attention at her age." I think Rivers is 76 but don't quote me on that. Bristol Palin on "DWTS," and of course in Bernhard's own words "The World's Biggest Movie Star," Angelina Jolie and her starring role in the film "Salt." Sorry Sandi, I liked the movie '" a lot. Sandra's shot by shot account of the films beginning was a bit unsettling considering she didn't miss a beat, didn't miss a mark, and must have seen the film more than once. Come on, admit it, I don't even remember the film THAT well. Funny nevertheless. Of course this moved right on to Jennifer Aniston and Bernhard's "What's wrong with this picture?" Making her thoughts known that no matter how hard she tries with revealing photo shoots Aniston just "isn't sexy." Ouch, that's gotta hurt.
She talked about being a mother and raising her daughter with her girlfriend Sara. Her daughters Bat-Mitzvah and wanting to become a Wiccan, Kabbalah, and flying down to Miami on Jet Blue watching a marathon of "The Housewives of Beverly Hills." I guess I'm the only one who doesn't watch this show, not that I haven't tried. I just can't get it.I enjoyed her take on going on TV auditions and why she deems them unnecessary "Don't you know who I am by now?" the end of Western Civilization as we know it '" Prince appearance on The View, etc.
The musical numbers were few and far between. As we parted this evening she belted out "When Will I See You Again," to thunderous applause. Of course there was an encore. She returned to the stage in black fishnet stockings, black velvet shorts, white tailored and tailed coat, black top hat, carrying a riding crop. Ah, the dominatrix segment of the show had arrived. After this eye opener she bid us her final a due to a standing ovation and cat calls. It was a great well rounded performance as always from Ms. Bernhard.
For those who may be curious; I interviewed Sandra about a week ago and be found also on the web at http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/6258126/sandra_bernhard_an_interview_with_a.html?cat=49 I asked her last night about her one guilty pleasure which for her is watching football. She doesn't have one definitive football team but she is pulling for the Packers in the Super Bowl next month. She hates my favorite team so we're not even going to go there which we argued and bantered back and forth for a couple of minutes. Thanks Sandi for a great show and fun night. See you again when you roll back into my hometown.
