Sandra Bernhard Truly is Everything Bad and Beautiful

Merz
Coming off of her wildly popular off-off Broadway one woman (with the exception of a backing band) show, Everything Bad and Beautiful, Sandra Bernhard has moved onto plan B. With a new production that is less scripted and more spur of the moment, Sandra Bernhard is Plan B from Outer Space.

Everything Bad and Beautiful had a successful New York run, lasting three months at New York's Daryl Roth Theatre, and with good reason. Everything Bad and Beautiful was an amusing, moving tribute to many of the subjects that Ms. Bernhard holds dear, including her daughter, her girlfriend, and her art, and also gave her the opportunity to do her trademark ranting with scathing commentaries on everything political and exclusionary in our society. It was a beautiful, perfectly-paced blend of music and spoken-word entirely deserving of the critical praise and audience response it received. If you did not get a chance to see it, Breaking Records is re-releasing the album version of the show, also titled "Everything Bad and Beautiful" with a bonus track in June. Whether you love her or hate her, this is something that should not be missed.

Nothing is too sacred for Bernhard's sassy commentary, from Britney Spears to John Kerry to Martin Luther King, Jr. to Lynne Cheney. Bernhard's comedy is intermingled with bits of song; and together they are woven together in perfect harmony that lends itself to having a spoken word type of feel to the entire show. Each bit flows to the next seamlessly, with the songs mixed in as if it was supposed to be that way all along. This is a show unlike any other you will be being put on by a comedian. That is because Sandra Bernhard is not just a comedian. Simply put she is a diva goddess. Her social commentary is right on. Her quick wit and sharp tongue are both shocking and hysterical at the same time, without crossing the line of being offensive and rude. Her voice is not a pretty little packaged instrument; it is raw, gritty and charged with a passion that is missing in the cookie cutter voices that are gracing most Broadway stages and our radio stations in this current climate of mediocrity.

For now, though, Bernhard is out on the road, touring with her new stage show, Sandra Bernhard is Plan B from Outer Space. After sold out performances in Seattle, Richmond, and Chicago, Sandra Bernhard is Plan B from Outer Space is coming to Minneapolis from April 19 - April 22nd. If she is in your area, be sure to check it out. If you have never seen her live, you will leave wondering what took you so long and how come you did not get the memo not to miss her before now.
