Sandra Bullock and Ryan Reynolds: Really Just Friends?

K.C. Dermody
Sandra Bullock and Ryan Reynolds continue to say they're just friends, with sources insisting that the couple is like "brother and sister," and there is nothing more to it. It strikes me as a little bit odd that they would go on vacation to Jackson Hole, Wyo., together, as two very attractive people of the opposite sex, and neither one is thinking of the other as relationship material.

While I believe it is possible for a man and a woman to be just friends, 99 percent of the time, there is more to it than that. Either the man is lusting after the woman who wants nothing more, or vice versa. Working relationships might be different, but you don't go on vacation with your co-worker. Especially to a super romantic place like Jackson Hole.

How many times have we heard celebrities say "Oh, we're just friends," when they are only trying to buy more time before the relationship goes public.

Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie were "just friends" on the set of "Mr. and Mrs. Smith." It wasn't long after that the supposedly perfect marriage between Pitt and Jennifer Anniston was history.

In May 2010, there was a widespread rumor about Charlize Theron and Keanu Reeves after they were spotted kissing outside a Hollywood restaurant. The incident was said to be a "wild exaggeration" and completely untrue.

Fast forward 11 months, and Theron and Reeves are the "newest Hollywood couple." The two were said to be old friends for years, and nothing more, but friendship quickly turned into love after Theron divorced former husband Stuart Townsend.

There are enough Hollywood relationship examples to write a rather long book, but another couple who staunchly insisted that they were just friends, was "Twilight" stars, Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson.

Back in 2009, Stewart commented, "Robert and I are great friends but I understand why you would assume that, when we lean on each other for support, there must be something more."

Finally, in 2011, the couple has made their relationship more out in the open, with lots of cuddling and kissing out in public.

Only time will tell if Reynolds and Bullock will publicly declare their love for each other, but I won't be surprised to see the headline appear in Hollywood news sometime soon. If they are really good friends, their relationship will have a great start, but is tinsel town, so I won't even mention the word forever. Let's just say it has a better chance at lasting longer than the average Hollywood hookup.
