Sandra Bullock Wins for The Blind Side at the 67th Golden Globe Awards
Bullock Beats Out Gabourey Sidibe's Critically-Acclaimed Performance inPrecious
Sandra Bullock defeats Golden Globe favorite Gabourey Sidibe
Also nominated for a Golden Globe in the "Comedy or Musical" category for The Proposal, Bullock delivered a surprising, multi-layer performance as Leigh Anne Tuohy, a wealthy Atlanta housewife who opens her home to teenager Michael Oher. The Blind Side follows Oher's journey from homeless teen to his rookie season with the Baltimore Ravens. With the Tuohy family on his team, Oher gained an education, a stable home life and a career.
Bullock's performance defeated newcomer Gabourey Sidibe, who made a name for herself in Precious: Based on the Novel 'Push' by Sapphire. Going into the 67th Golden Globes Awards, Sidibe, wearing a green evening gown, seemed like the odds-on favorite. Earlier, on the red carpet, Sidibe commented on her nomination and the rain. "It's fantastic, it's so overwhelming and it's raining. It's ruining my dress," a somewhat distressed Sidibe said.
To win the Golden Globe for "Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture - Drama," Bullock also had to defeat these notable actresses:
Emily Blunt (The Young Victoria): Delightfully snotty in The Devil Wears Prada, Emily Blunt played the title role in "The Young Victoria," a costume drama following Queen Victoria during the early years of her reign. Blunt has several films in the pipeline, in particular the remake of "The Wolfman," so this won't be Blunt's last trip to the Golden Globes or the Academy Awards.
Helen Mirren (The Last Station): One of the finest actresses of any generation, Mirren plays Sofya Tolstoy, wife of Leo Tolstoy, in The Last Station. Set during the last year of Tolstoy's life, "The Last Station" depicts Sofya and Leo's sometimes combative relationship. Mirren is like a chameleon in her films, playing the wife of a famous writer as easily as she played the title role in The Queen.
Carey Mulligan (An Education): Set during the 1960's, "An Education" shows how a young English girl learns some real lessons about life. As played by Carey Mulligan, young Jenny is placed on the fast track to Oxford University, but she finds herself drawn into a relationship with an older man.
Sandra Bullock on plastic dresses and "Snuggies"
Sudden rain turned the Red Carpet for the 67th Golden Globe Awards into a soggy mess, but Sandra Bullock had no worries. "I'm wearing a plastic dress," she told co-host Billy Bush. During their interview, Bush also offered an official "Golden Globes Snuggie" to Bullock, who was wearing a strapless lavender evening gown. Bullock's response was a simple "Can I belt it?"
