Sango French Onion Soup Bowls, Review

How hard can it be to find French onion soup bowls? Answer: Extremely!

That's what I found out recently after going to several major department stores ....Macy's, Carson's, Kohl's, Penney's, Sears, to name a few. I couldn't find them anywhere. Apparently no one carries them anymore because...well just because!

The funny thing was all I really wanted them for was French onion soup, which I had just learned to make. Just as I was about to give up someone suggested Bed Bath and Beyond, about one of the only stores I hadn't been to. Although they did have them, they only carried one brand, Le Creuset and one color, white. Even though I was tempted I took a pass. The white was too bland, too sterile looking. Then the idea struck me, Amazon!

Amazon is becoming my new best friend nowadays for....just about everything!

I came across a brand I had never heard of...Sango. The pictures looked interesting. This particular brand was imported from Indonesia, a country known for their stoneware. The selection came in a variety of rich, earthy colors -- from gold dust black, brown, green and just added (but now out-of-stock) splash. What I liked best was that the colors were divided, dark hues separated by lighter hues, they weren't all the same monotone. It appealed to me. Also, each bowl is 16 oz., has a matte finish with a smooth inside interior. Best of all they sell for a reasonable cost of $14.99, plus shipping and handling, for a set of four. Perfect!

But before I ordered them I was a little concerned about one thing, having them shipped. I had read on numerous reviews on Amazon that they arrived broken in a million little pieces. Even though Amazon guarantees every item they ship, it would be a pain in the neck to have to ship them back if they arrived broken.
Anyways, I decided to take a chance and order them and they arrived safe and sound. Not one broken bowl!

I ordered Sango's gold dust green and have used them for a little over two months now. And I couldn't be happier! They're must-haves if you're making french onion soup or any dish that has to be stuck underneath a broiler. It's also oven proof, up to 350 degrees. Even though I've only used it for soup, it could easily hold a mini casserole. My only minor quibble with it is that they could've made the handle a little longer, currently it's only two inches, another inch or so would've made it easier to grip. Other than that, it serves its purpose rather nicely. Solid construction, with just the right amount of thickness. Firm, but not heavy. On the underside it clearly states dishwasher and microwavable safe. Good to know, even though I assume bowls are generally that way nowadays.

So if you're looking for smart, contemporary looking French onion soup bowls I'd highly recommend Sango.
