Santa Cops in the Philippines

Would They Work?

The members of the Philippine Police Force of the National Capital Region (NCR) have devised a way to thwart criminality in very crowded places this Christmas.

Although the season brings merriment, it also brings out all sorts of criminals, including the petty ones. And they torment the people in malls and other public places who are doing their Christmas shopping and who are piling up groceries for their Christmas dinners. What a terrible thing to happen when if you are about to pay, and you find out that your wallet is gone.

The Santa cops are actually policemen who are just wearing the classic Santa's red suit, and they roam around public places with their armaments and a trained canine. And to join in the Christmas cheer, they also give out candies. They entertain photo opportunities with kids.

The public feels safe because of heightened police visibility, but police say that people should still be more careful when they go out--not to wear valuable jewelry and to keep their cellphones and wallets safe.

It is still better to be safe than sorry.

Have a merry Christmas everyone!
