For Christmas this year I want a college football playoff. It doesn't have to be big or extravagant, contain 64 teams like the basketball playoff, but I would like one with at least maybe 8 teams. I know directors from major conferences like the SEC, Big 12 and especially the ACC and Big East have asked you to keep the current system every year, but I think they have been naughty this year and deserve a lump of coal. The officials in the SEC have missed some very important calls in some of their games, many of which have favored their precious national championship team Florida. The SEC then failed to properly address the issue and instead warned the coaches that any negative comments about the officials would result in penalties to the coaches. The Big 12 hasn't been much better in their officiating, but if I give them any credit it will be that they haven't called out their coaches....yet. The Big East and ACC both have teams that have been undeservingly moved up the top 25. Cincinnati is ranked 4th in the AP Poll 7th in the USA Today Poll. Cincinnati's only win against a top 25 team was against South Florida, who is also overrated and currently not even ranked in the top 25. Enough though about these conferences that don't deserve to have their Christmas wishes fulfilled. Back to my Christmas Wish.
When I opened up my web browser today I found a 16 team bracket. It took the top 16 teams in the BCS rankings and had them matched up according to seeds, just like in the NCAA basketball regional. If this were the case, the matchups would be as follows:
1) Florida vs 16) Ohio State 2) Texas vs 15) Houston
8) Oregon vs 9) LSU 7) Boise State vs 10) Georgia Tech
3) Alabama vs 14) Utah 4) Iowa vs 13) Pittsburgh
6) TCU vs 11) Penn State 5) Cincinnati vs 12) USC
Santa, I want so badly to watch these teams play each other in a single elimination tournament. I promise I won't ever yell at the Refs on the TV anymore, I won't make fun of girls basketball anymore, I will even promise to keep my wise cracks about NASCAR fans to a bare minimum.
Santa I know you will have other people tell you that the players don't have time to have a bracket like this, because it would occur during finals. I'm sure you know however that Division II and Division III schools have a 32 team bracket that begins at the end of November, ends in late December and goes right through finals, they seem to do just fine.
Santa, a lot of people will bring up a million reasons why a playoff system in college football is not feasible. Please don't listen to them, they are wrong. I've been a very good boy this year and haven't kicked the dog once when my team lost. All I want for Christmas is my 16 team tournament!
