Make your vote count by understanding what the candidates believe and want to accomplish. Everyone is invited to attend Meet Your Candidate Night on Oct. 20, 2009 at 7:00p at the Santaquin Elementary School, 25 S 400 W.

Thomas Jefferson, one of the founding fathers of the United States of America, penned the following thoughts, "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness."

Being endowed with those rights also incurs a certain obligation on the part of all citizens to protect their freedoms. Is simply maintaining the right to vote enough? No, exercising that right is just as important as having it. The two are a pair and the one should never be separated from the other.

Many might ask, "Does the individual vote matter?" Yes! Grassroots politics are the bedrock of personal and political freedoms, and for that reason, a vote cast mindlessly may be worse than no vote at all. It's incumbent upon each citizen to learn the views, ideas, and proposed plans of each political candidate in order to size up the abilities of those running for office and to then vote for political candidates that will work in behalf of and for their best interests. After all, those candidates are the ones that become the political leaders, the ones who cast the die for change in local communities.

In small towns across the country, political elections are often close contests, with the winning candidate separated from the loser by small numbers. In fact, elections can be so close that many times there is a call for a recount. Thus, it is imperative that the citizens of small towns give careful consideration before casting their votes. A well-known name, a history of longevity in the community, or a family line that goes back to the town's founding fathers is not enough to qualify a candidate for office. It's the ability to think clearly and concisely, a penchant for looking ahead and planning for the community's best interests, and a knack for relating to the residents and understanding what they need that qualifies a political candidate ... not just a name, charismatic smile and a strong handshake.

So, if you live in Santaquin, UT, take a hour out of your evening and meet the political candidates. You'll find it's time well spent.
