I don't know when it started, but Sarah Jessica Parker has become a huge fashion icon. Maybe it was Carrie on Sex and the City that inspired us or her amazing and sometimes quirky gowns on the red carpet. Whatever it may be, Sarah Jessica is very fashionable. Her character Carrie always had edge and imagination even when her clothes were outrageous. The real Sarah used to be a dancer and seems very poised and elegant in every outfit. She commands a lot of attention despite her tiny stature.
I remember hearing that she grew up very poor and had a large family. Apparently she is still far from extravagant with her money. That is part of her appeal for me. She loves fashion and knows how difficult it is for people who read Vogue and other style magazines and become despondent at the ridiculous prices. I have had a love affair with fashion since I was a toddler, but I have also been very limited in spending money on fashion. I love stores like H&M, subsequently, I am excited about Sarah Jessica's new line Bitten sold at a Steve & Barry's which soon will be opening near Atlanta where I live. The line looks great and everything is under $19.98. That is very impressive. I love SJP because of her whimsical outfits both on and off screen and not her suburban wear. Her website, bittensjp.com, features her clothing as well as the winning outfit that was designed by one of the contestants of Project Runway. I went on her website and was disappointed with her clothes because it was so casual and boring at times. If one does read Vogue and likes Carrie's look, I am not sure one would be thrilled with her collection.
In addition, there are a few things that would worry me about her line. The first is where are the clothing made and what are the worker's compensation and conditions? Usually, cheap products for the consumer are costly to the worker. As of right now I am not sure of the labor practices and on her website it just states that the clothing is made "all over the world including United States." This does not explain sufficiently. Part of what I love about H&M is their fair wages, good labor practices, generous benefits to employees and their clothes are amazing! They also feature collections designed by celebrities and top fashion designers.
The second concern is the quality because often cheap clothing is low quality. After shopping at Forever 21, I termed their clothing "one-time use clothes." Amongst her many interviews including one with Oprah Sarah Jessica Parker said that quality was her highest concern but as I was reading the blogs on thebudgetfashionista.com, I was disappointed to hear from consumers that the clothes and accessories were ill-fit and had poor quality. I will check out her clothes when Steve & Barry's gets here but I think I will stick to H&M for now.
