Sarah Palin Facts

Quick Factsheet on Sarah Palin

Ryan Kopf
Sarah Palin, current governer of Alaska, was selected by John McCain to be the vice president on the Republican 2008 presidential ticket. McCain selected her in an attempt to please the base of the republican party, while hopefully reaching out to former Hillary Clinton supporters. Unfortunately for him, this will likely not work considering Sarah Palin is extremely conservative, so much that it would alienate nearly any former Clinton voter.

Sarah Palin is ultra conservative on a panoply of issues. She opposes abortion in any circumstance, even in the cases of rape and incest. When asked about it, she said "I would choose life." She also hunts often, probably more than even Dick Cheney, and the similarities don't seem to end there. With her on the ticket it has become even easier for democrats to label McCain as running for a third Bush term.

Her Experience: Governer Sarah Palin has served only 1.5 years as governor, since she was elected in 2006. Prior to that time, she spent two terms on the city council of Wasilla, Alaska. She is often criticized for having next to no foreign policy experience, considering she's never had to deal with other countries in her day to day work.

Her Education: Sarah Palin attended Hawaii Pacific for Business Administration for a semester, but transferred to North Idaho College. At NIC she recieved a BS in communications-journalism, along with a minor in political science.

Her Earmarks: She worked with the office of indicted Ted Stevens to secure millions of dollars of earmarks for Alaska and specifically Wasilla. $15 million was earmarked, for example, to link Wasilla by rail to a ski resort.

On The Issues: On the issues, Sarah Palin consistently takes an extremely far right wing stance. She opposes abortion unconditionally, even for rape and incest victims. She strongly supports the NRA, and is very religious. She promotes developing much of Alaska for oil drilling - which is criticized as a stopgap, temporary fix for oil problems. She at first supported the bridge to nowhere, before she opposed it. She opposes same-sex marriage, and also believes that a large government is bad.

In the end, Sarah Palin will do little to help John McCain in 2008. She will ensure ultra-conservative republicans, who would've voted for him anyway, will stay within the party, but she will turn away nearly any independent. Her strongly right-wing political positions alienate many independent and also former HRC supporter, who would typically prefer to elect someone more moderate.

How does Tianna expect the 13-year-old girl raped by her grandfather, step-father, uncle, mother's boyfriend, cousin, to take responsibilty for a baby she had no desire to bring into this world? Use protection? No guarantees there. And what happens when Tianna's boyfriend decides to split? Why not carp about men who impregnant women, then decide to leave, not owning up to their parental responsiblity? Choosing abortion is the business only of the female who opts to terminate a pregnacy. Planned Parenthood is often targeted by anti-abortionists, yet they council young pregnant girls about faith, and tell them they need to consider spiritual issues, that abortion should be last choice (after keeping baby, or putting up for adoption. It is people like Palin, and Tianna who need to rethink their stubbornly held opinons. Especially the "no exceptions" ones. Let God be the judge.

Old article, but the comment from Tianna makes my blood boil. A woman with an ectopic pregnancy, chooses early doctor assisted termination. If she did not have surgery to remove the fetus, it would eventually grow, bursting the fallopian tube, likely killing the mother. In the rarer cases, when it is growing, say inside a woman's stomach, and does not abort itself, it must be done by health care professional. If you can see what is between these ( ) parentheses, you can see what a newly fertilized egg looks like. Likening taking a morning after pill to flush a potentially fertilized egg from a raped woman's system can hardly be compared to "a mother killing her baby". It takes weeks for that egg to attach itself to the womb, entering the embryo stage. We already have laws prohibiting doctor assisted pregnancy terminations pertaining to fetus' which are or could be viable births.

You know I love ya' Secretsides, but Palin's husband quit his job to devote the time to the kids. As far as her stance on foreign policy, because of her states location she actually is versed on foreign affairs as the commander in chief of the Alaskan National guard. That's more than Obama has done.

I could. His 'shady' friends aren't very shady, his integrity is pretty heigh, and he has tons of experience. There, done. I wish I had time to fill in the details, but I'm busy, tired, and have things that pay better to do.

    Tianna
    your pretty stupid,
you can't control if your raped.

  • Ryan Kopf10/15/2008

Tianna, are you saying you agree that women can't have an abortion even in the cases of rape or incest? How inhuman are you?

  • Tianna10/15/2008

A mother has no "right" to murder a child after it is born. If you don't have the means to take care of a child, use protection. My husband and I are in college and don't plan on having children until after school when we can afford to care them. It isn't that difficult to assure that an unplanned pregnancy won't occur, but if it were to happen with us, we would have the child, the only exception would be if it were to seriously endanger my life. I think choice should be whether or not you must keep the child, not whether or not that child gets to live. If I were to actually have the kid and have second thoughts or realize I can't care for it I wouldn't have the "right" to kill it then, so I don't see the difference. You don't get to always have your way and push the "abort" button whenever something doesn't go as planned. It isn't the case in other matters, there should be no exception here. Own up and take some responsibility, people.
