Sarah Palin Live, Uncut in Tonight's VP Debate

Federalist or Flop?

Debra Paulsen
As the clock ticks away the moments until the arrival of the long-awaited and highly anticipated Palin-Biden debate time, Americans are wondering: Will Sarah Palin come out punching and prove she has what it takes to be VP of the United States? Many have their doubts, as indicated in recent polls regarding the rare Sarah Palin interviews with CBS' Katie Couric.

The most recent mention of Palin comes in an excerpt from an interview aired on the CBS Evening News on Wednesday night. Palin casts herself as a federalist. Yet, further on, in this very same interview, when asked to name a Supreme Court decision that she did not agree with, Palin cited the well-known standard of Roe v. Wade. Under further direct questioning, and given ample time and opportunity, Palin was unable to respond with any other examples of controversial Supreme Court rulings. She was at an obvious loss for words.

Then, of course, who can forget the interview on ABC with Charles Gibson, which aired September 11? Sarah Palin was so flustered she was actually stuttering, and completely unable to respond to the question regarding President Bush's preemptive strike doctrine.

It was quite apparent she did not have a clue, especially when the interviewer had to explain to the VP candidate what the preemptive strike doctrine was.

There have also been claims of censorship by Palin against the mainstream media. This is quite ironic considering that it is the McCain-Palin campaign has been placing such strict limits on granting interviews. The claims of censorship and filtering gained so much strength that supporters have formed a group that calls itself Free Sarah Palin. Its goal is to encourage citizens not to watch the interviews given by Palin. This is because they claim they do not portray the real Sarah Palin.

It would be very difficult to prove or disprove the claims of censorship and filtering at this point, as there have been so few interviews granted to base comparisons on. One thing is sure. We will look forward to hearing from Sarah Palin completely uncensored and unfiltered tonight.

The viewer ratings for a debate will no doubt be at record levels as Americans tune in to see how Sarah Palin handles herself unscripted and live in front of America -- with limited time to form her responses.

I'm a law professor, and I can tell you that most lay people -- even very smart ones -- cannot name a list of Supreme Court cases they disagree with. In fact, as a conservative, there are probably very few current cases Palin disagrees with - given her conservative background. Without googling -- what cases do you disagree/agree with?
