Sarah Palin Tea Party Speech Elicits Shouts of 'Run, Sarah, Run'

Can Republicans Win the 2012 Presidency Without Libertarian Support?

The Republican Party is in desperate need of direction and a Sarah Palin Tea Party Movement speech supposedly delivered it. Concurrently, it threw Ron Paul - semi-libertarian Tea Party instigator - under the bus. What's next?

Sarah Palin Tea Party Speech

When Sarah Palin gave her acceptance speech of the Republican vice presidential candidate nomination, the Republican Party was pleasantly surprised. Articulate, funny, obviously able to follow the clues of a gifted speech writer and overall quite personable, Republicans came to view her as the new face of the party. Her Tea Party speech aimed to resurrect this goodwill.

Fast forward past the election loss, highly publicized family issues, a tell-some book and a sudden decision to quit as governor of Alaska, and Sarah Palin is looking more like a liability than an asset for the Republican Party. Even though she now courts Ron Paul's Tea Party Movement in the hopes of possibly resurrecting her grasp for the presidency, moderate republicans and semi-libertarians find themselves at a crossroad.

Sarah Palin in 2012?

Ron Paul initially shaped the Tea Party Movement to further his anti big-government spending message and to rally a grassroots support base. Going up against a charismatic democrat who won the presidency with little more than promises of "hope" and "change," he found that the moderate republican wing of the party might just be the new direction it needed.

Instead, the Sarah Palin tea party speech showcases that one of the more divisive personas in the Republican Party is ready to take over the Ron Paul Tea Party Movement and use it to further her interests. Of course, the signs of disenchantment between Ron Paul and the Tea Party have been on the horizon for a while. Just last month Politico quoted Paul as saying "I don't even see them as being Republicans" when referring to Tea Party members.

He further warned the GOP against forging close ties with the Tea Party Movement, in part because it is too unpredictable. Of course, this might be little more than sour grapes, considering that the Tea Party is refusing to align itself solely with Ron Paul, as outlined by Sunday's Dallas News. In fact, this very failure of walking in lockstep alongside the Republican Party has endeared the movement to moderates and Republican libertarians alike.

It also explains the attraction the Tea Party Movement holds for Sarah Palin. This now poses the question: was the Sarah Palin Tea Party speech sufficient for rallying support to take on the Republican Party nomination in 2012, or are there bigger affiliations on the horizon? If the 'run, Sarah, run' shouts are any indication - as reported by the Christian Science Monitor - she might be on the right track.

Can the person made out to be the Witch of the West by the left actually succeed in "sweeping" an election? LOL. Good write-up.

Hmmm...wonder if Julia Beirut, or whatever her name is, has a problem w/ the actual POTUS not being able to lead w/o the TOTUS

So Sarah runs with a RINO in the last election, endorses a RINO and we are to believe she is a true conservative? I don't believe she has what it takes. I hope someone with the true beliefs and heart that's needed to return our republic back in the right direction will run and win. Unfortunately I don't think Ron Paul will run again so only time will tell.
    Hmmm, maybe Peter Schiff! :p

Ron Paul's Tea Parties in 2007/2008 were entirely grassroots. Nobody got paid to speak. Nobody had notes written on their hand.

These "new" tea parties should keep in mind that independents make up a large percentage of the current attendees - many are sick to death of both parties.

Palin's political perspective or, to employ her preferred, populist parlance, "that fear-y, status quo thingy," seems to be working out just fine, at least for her. This self-centered strategy has proven extremely effective in the short-term, upping Ms. Palin's media profile while lining her pockets at the same time.

However, appealing to people's irrational fear of change generally brings out the worst in them (a fact demonstrated by the many misguided and offensive slogans spouted at tea party events last summer).

And assuring voters that we can continue consuming resources at or above our current rate is as reckless as it is dishonest. To use a tired metaphor, at a time when Americans must get leaner, Palin is scoring political points by telling us we can eat ice cream every night for dinner and never gain weight or run out of milk.
