Sarah Palin Visits Auburn NY for Founders Day Celebration

Caryn Murray
Auburn, NY-You betcha! Sarah Palin makes a special appearance to guest speak at the Public Address on the first ever Founders Day Celebration held in Auburn, NY.

Auburn , and surrounding cities in the Finger Lakes Region of Central New York, have always been proud of notable residents in our local history.

Notable figures in Finger Lakes History include:

  • Susan B. Anthony, who played a major role in the women's rights movement.
  • Harriet Tubman, the leader of the Underground Railroad... an action that helped to free many slaves.
  • William Seward, a political figure who played a major role in Auburn history, and is given responsibility for the purchase of Alaska when he served as Secretary of State under former president Abraham Lincoln.
The first ever Founders Day Celebration featured a parade and many local vendors as well as live entertainment, but certainly the highlight of the event was an appearance by Alaska governor (and the first ever female vice presidential candidate) Governor Sarah Palin.

Her appearance was part of a tour across New York, but this specific stop in Auburn had more to do with the strong ties between the city of Auburn, NY (thanks to William Seward) and the entire state of Alaska. Palin was given a warm welcome by a large crowd, though there were many protestors ready with "Pro-Life" pickets and other varying opinions.

During her speech to the local residents, Palin announced the signing of a proclamation... declaring June 6th the official 'Auburn Founders Day' in the state of Alaska. Residents cheered as she sat down to sign this proclamation, which was followed by her receipt of a gift of the key to the city of Auburn.

The appearance of Sarah Palin may be the biggest deal in Auburn since, well... ever. The most heartwarming moment of all was the extended response given when Palin gave a special moment of recognition to PFC Pat Devoe, a local resident who was recently killed in the line of duty protecting our country. Her special attention to this resident received loud cheers that did not easily die down.

Following the speech, Palin was scheduled to tour the Seward Home which has been donated as a museum to commemorate the many notable actions that Seward is known for, including being the first to use the insanity plea.

Auburn will continue to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the state of Alaska throughout all of 2009, but this date will be remembered as another important milestone in Auburn history. "First ever female vice presidential candidate?" Really? That would be Geraldine Ferraro, Einstein.
