Sarah Palin-The Great White Hope

Many people believe that if Senator Barack Obama lays out a more detailed economic plan, create negative, aggressive commercial ads that refute McCain's malicious lies; or develop a better strategy that resonates with working class white voters that he would be able to move several points ahead of Republican presidential nominee, John McCain in the 2008 presidential election. I believe that if Senator Barack Obama does all the above, balance the national budget and find a cure for cancer this election is going to remain a tight race. When I talk to poor white families who are struggling because their jobs have shipped overseas, laid-off from work, no health insurance; can barely make ends meet because of high food and gas prices; I am surprised when they tell that they are going to vote for John McCain.

When I read the op-ed sections in several newspapers many white people will flat out say, "I can not vote for Obama because he is black." This is not what they really mean. The psychological, unconscious reason why some poor, working class and middle class white Americans refuse to vote for Senator Obama is because they would much rather live in poverty, continue to exhaust our country's resources fighting wars than properly educating our children; not be able to afford health insurance, food, shelter, clothes or gas and eat dirt than give up their most prized, precious, possession that is worth more than all of the money in the world-white privilege.

Why would they want to give up the ideology of the white race as being superior and having the power to set the standard of beauty and intelligence; control the media that perpetuates stereotypes bias that denigrates other ethnic groups; and maintain institutionalized racism that gives the white psyche an unfair, exclusive educational and economic advantage in learning about themselves and excluding the accomplishments of other ethnic groups. Why would poor white Americans -- who rich white Americans look down upon-- give up their trump card that says that the white race is superior to all other ethnic groups?

When John McCain selected Sarah Palin as his running mate, he wanted to appeal to the primitive, irrational, emotional brain of white voters. He wanted to capitalize off of the gender card that Hillary Clinton had successfully played in her bid for the Democratic presidential nomination, but he needed something else that Hillary had that was making it difficult for Obama to seal the deal. He needed a person with white skin that white people could relate to, be excited about, and think of as one of them. John McCain did not want to make the mistake of selecting some educated white person with a sophisticated vocabulary, experience with foreign policies, a respect for science, education and knowledge on how to deal with a multicultural society and global economy-he needed somebody who would appeal to un-evolved, un-enlightened white people (he already has the support of wealthy people) who remember the good old days when black people knew their place in America. He found all of these qualities in Governor, Sarah Palin.

Sarah Palin has been caught in so many lies that I don't have the time nor desire to write them all out. What so many intelligent white people who are sophisticated in their thinking are asking,"why are people supporting a woman who is setting women's progress back a century with shotgun weddings and back alley abortions? Why is it okay for Sarah Palin's husband to be apart of group that wants to make Alaska a separate country and the mainstream media is not questioning her patriotism to America? As an outsider looking in, I would say that it is because white America decides who and what is patriotic and what applies to a bi-racial black man does not apply to, Sarah Palin, the great White Hope.

She was not selected because of her forward thinking views and policies; Mrs. Palin was selected as the vice presidential nominee for the Republican ticket to keep hope alive no matter the devastating price that all Americans will pay because in the long-term-- being white is better than being right.

According to Wikipedia, "The term, "the great white hope," reflects the racism and segregation of the era in which Johnson fought. It could be argued that Johnson, the first African American to hold the World Heavyweight Championship title, was the best fighter of his generation...The great white hope" is a reference to the boxer whom whites hoped would finally defeat Johnson....The first "great white hope" to accept the challenge was Jim Jeffries who came out of retirement to fight Johnson unsuccessfully in 1910. The media, eager for a "Great White Hope", found a champion for their racism in Jeffries. He said, "I am going into this fight for the sole purpose of proving that a white man is better than a Negro." ... A furor was created at the fight, as a ringside band played, "All coons look alike to me" and promoters encouraged an all-white crowd to chant "Kill the nigger".

Sarah Palin and John McCain would never say these words in modern day society where publicly uttering these words could cause an up rise, they would simply say, "kill the community organizer!"

Excellent work. I hope the lessons of your commentary are not lost in the 2012 election.

Thank you. This election is all about race. The country is barraged by misinformation about Barack Obama right and left and no one focuses on actual issues and policies. The choice of Palin is to drive home the reality that white is right. It is shameful and no American should fall for it.
