Sargeant's Flea and Tick Medication: Is it Safe for Your Pets?
A Review of Sargeant's Flea and Tick Medication
I bought some over the counter flea and tick medication that you apply between their shoulder blades that lasts for a month and it seemed to work fine. She didn't get any fleas or ticks. I picked up Sergeant's, a well-known brand name flea and tick product like the ones that I used before.
It wasn't long until she became agitated and began to dig at her neck with her feet. She was absolutely miserable. She panted and jumped up and down off of the couch. She was miserable. I didn't connect it to the Sergeant's flea and tick medication until later. She was scared and continued to dig at her neck. We found that she had an open sore where the medication was applied. I gave her a bath and it soothed her somewhat. We put antibiotic ointment on her sore and called our veterinarian.
On the site that I did the search about the Sergeant's complaints, it was recommended that you bath your dog in a diluted solution of warm water with a little Dawn dish washing liquid. You should also give them plenty of water. Milk and cottage cheese was suggested to help your dog too.
My search on the product horrified me when I read some of the comments by other dog and cat owners. They had similar complaints and shared similar symptoms that their pets shared with my Lydia. Some of the dogs had the exact symptoms as she had. There were also pets that died and others that were on intravenous drips to hydrate them and flush out toxins in their bodies.
I will never get Sergeant's flea and tick medication for my dogs in the future. Many are saying that this product should be taken off of the market. If you have used this product and have had problems, check with your veterinarian and please use it with caution if you must use it at all. It isn't worth a few dollars to have your beloved pet in misery or worse yet to have them poisoned or dead.
If I ever decide to try a less expensive product on my dog or pets, I will do a search before buying it. Veterinarians according to my search, said that these products are less expensive because of inferior ingredients that are dangerous to your pets.

Post a CommentI am going through the same thing right now. Took my schnauzer to the vet because he was so agitated and seemed disoriented. This product needs to be taken off the shelves! PERIOD! My dog has never been sick in the thirteen years I have owned him and now he is suffering. The vet gave him a shot of morphine for the pain and steroids. She said she sees this kind of think all the time. How can this be? How can the EPA allow this to go on? Something constructive needs to happen!
unfortunatly i also found out the hard way about this product on all 3 of my dogs. i will never use these products nor any others on this forum. i called the store i bought sargents from and they immediately took it off the shelves i also informed the epa and called fda also i called sargents and they wont even give me a refund for the product all i got was a run around so i informed them if it was last thing i do on this earth is to have them out of service so to speak and i wont rest untill they arwe out of business permenatly.
My dog, Max acquired the same symptoms. I now notice twitching with his lips. This product should definitely be removed from store shelves.
:)
My vet recommends Vectra 3D
You have provided a good info here. Thank you so much for writing.
This is great to know. I would hate to use this on a dog and find out the side effects afterward. I'll bet it was made in China or Mexico like OFF Clip On Mosquito Repellent which has so many warnings you would have to be crazy to use it.
I never use Sargeants or Hartz flea control. Both are a waste of money and don't work. In fact, I don't buy any products either one of them make anymore. Sorry you had to find that out the hard way.
Good information!
Good to know. There was some sort of Hartz that was bad years back too. Scary that helping can hurt.
