Suzana S. Drobnjakovic was born May 17, 1973 in Los Angeles to a Serbian mother and Italian father. As a result, she speaks Serbian and Italian, in addition to English.
She is better known as Sasha Alexander these days.
Like many actors, Alexander began acting in school plays in seventh grade. However, her career actually began even before that. At a young age, she would act for her family for the attention and applause.
But she also had dreams of being an ice skater; dreams that were cut short due to a knee injury. Alexander had acting to fall back on.
Not afraid to take on controversial roles, she once played a lesbian TV Guide reporter and shared an on-screen kiss with Sarah Silverman. After that, her roles appear more tame by comparison: a Soap Opera Digest reporter interviewing Joey on "Friends," Gretchen Witter on "Dawson's Creek" and small movie roles in "Yes, Man," "He's Just Not That Into You" and "Mission Impossible III." She can also be seen on the "Ironman" DVD and Blu-ray doing a screen test with Robert Downey, Jr.
Her most memorable role, to date, was that of Special Agent Caitlin Todd on the first two seasons of "NCIS." Todd was a feisty little character who never backed down from Special Agent Gibbs (Mark Harmon) and could go head-to-head with Tony DiNozzo (Michael Weatherby) any day of the week.
Her departure from NCIS at the end of season two is something of a mystery. Though Alexander sings the praises of the show, she doesn't regret leaving. But her reasons for leaving are something she refuses to discuss, much to her credit. [1]
About a year after leaving NCIS, Alexander gave birth to her first child, Lucia Sofia in May of 2006. She later married long-time partner Edoardo Ponti in 2007. Ponti is the son of legendary actress Sophia Loren and late film producer Carlo Ponti. Alexander gave birth to their second child Leonardo Fortunato in December of 2010.
Alexander has only good things to say about mother-in-law Sophia Loren, stating, "She is an incredible inspiration to me. ... I have tremendous admiration for her." [1]
But her own mother is her true hero. In a segment for E! Entertainment Television, Alexander and her mother relive a few memories from Sasha's childhood.
Alexander is currently portraying Medical Examiner Dr. Maura Isles in the TNT television series "Rizzoli & Isles" based on the novels by Tess Gerritsen. The series airs on Mondays at 10 p.m. on TNT.
With a successful televsion series, two children, a happy marriage, actress Sasha Alexander is proof that a woman can have it all . . . and more if she wants!
