For this project, you will need (per rocking chair):
- Unfinished wooden rocking chair (available at craft supply shops)
- Medium or fine grit sandpaper
- Tack cloth or other soft cloth
- Krylon Indoor Outdoor Primer in All-Purpose White
- Krylon Indoor Outdoor Paint in Watermelon
- Leopard print scrapbook paper
- Craft knife
- Self-healing mat
- Pencil
- Ruler
- Mod Podge or other decoupage medium
- Sponge brush
- Popsicle stick
- Polyurethane sealant
- Newspaper and/or a large drop cloth
Due to the paint, glue, and sanding associated with this project, it is best that you choose a work area that is well ventilated and covered in either a large drop cloth or a few sheets of old newspaper prior to starting. Use a sheet or two of medium or fine grit sandpaper to smooth down the surface of the unfinished wooden rocking chair. Wipe away any grit or dust accumulated on the furniture piece with a tack cloth or other soft cloth.
Prime the entire chair with Krylon Indoor Outdoor Primer in All-Purpose White. (This make take multiple cans due to the size of the furniture piece and the thickness of the layer in which you are using.) Let the rocking chair dry for four to five hours. Paint the chair with Krylon Indoor Outdoor Paint in Watermelon. Add up to seven additional coats of paint, drying for thirty minutes between coats. Allow the project to dry overnight before proceeding.
Place the sheet of leopard print scrapbook paper flat on the self healing mat. With a ruler and a pencil, create one inch strips of the paper. Cut out the strips using a craft knife. Apply a good portion of Mod Podge or other decoupage medium to the back of one paper strip. Adhere the leopard print paper to the seat of the painted rocking chair, smoothing with a popsicle stick to prevent bubbling. Trim the paper as needed. Repeat the gluing process until the entire seat of the chair is covered in leopard print. Dry overnight.
Apply several coats of polyurethane sealant to the seat of the chair, according to manufacturer directions. Cure for several days before enjoying your new rocking chair creation.
