A fall out of the current economic meltdown and loss of jobs is the boost in the number of people exploring the option of home based businesses. The need for additional income for those whose hours at work have either been reduced or those who lost their jobs and therefore compelled to find alternative source of livelihood has made home based business the only fall back option for so many folks. The idea of setting up a home based business may appear cheap, smooth and easy, but in reality, no business is either smooth or easy. Starting a business and succeeding at it are two different issues entirely. Setting up and operating a successful home based business demands adequate preparation, diligence, sacrifice and consistency.

The first step towards establishing a successful home based business is to make a decision on what type of business to go into. It is always advisable to start out with something you have good aptitude for. This would entail evaluating your skills and talents and making sure that you have the necessary zeal and passion to put such skills and talents to good use. A lot of people go into business because they either heard about or know somebody who succeeded in such business. This is a quick recipe for failure. The best bet is to narrow your options to areas you are familiar with; perhaps a hobby or something you often spend your spare time doing.

Upon deciding on what business to engage in, the next step would be to carry out a business plan. This gives you the opportunity to research and get as much information as possible and be able to determine the viability and profitability of the business. You need to be sure that the returns from the business adequately compensates for time and resources invested. The key question you need to ask yourself is, how many people are in need of the services you intend to offer and how much are they willing to pay for it?

Depending on the choice of business, you will need to find out if there are any legal or zoning constraints and the applicable registration requirements for the business. For a sole proprietorship, there is very little paper work involved, but for partnerships and incorporations, you will need to fill out the necessary paper work, depending on the requirements of your state or county. Information on the requirements and procedure for registration could be obtained from your county clerk.

Depending on the nature of your intended business, you have to ensure that your house is suitable and well located to serve your purpose. If the business is such that require being visited by clients, then you have to be sure that your home is always in good shape to accommodate such high volume of human traffic. This calls for serious discipline since the level of comfort and cleanliness of your home would determine if clients want to pay a return visit. This may be more manageable of you live alone but if you live with family, you definitely need to discuss and let everyone understand how your business will affect them.

You will obviously need to advertise your new business. It is always best to start with your circle of influence, by reaching out to family, friends and neighbors. You need to develop some good sense of confidence. People need to know what difference you can make and why they have to take the risk of patronizing you. How well you relate with your clients, determines how long you will keep and how much referrals you get from them.
