Saturday Night Live -- Alec Baldwin / Jonas Brothers -- 2/14/09 -- Sketch by Sketch Review

Crutnacker
Opening -- Republican Congressional Leadership Meeting -- 3

Dan Aykroyd plays John Boehner in this sketch as Republicans plot against the success of the Democrats and the stimulus package. The jokes about a clueless Republican Party fall flat because they're far too simplistic and obvious. It is time for SNL to open with something besides a Congress sketch.

Monologue -- Alec Baldwin -- 8

A funny start as he thanks Christian Bale for now having the most famous recorded celebrity meltdown. Jack McBrayer makes a cameo appearance and leads to a funny Q&A where the audience is more in love with McBrayer than Baldwin.

Jonas Brothers Kick Out Gary Jonas --3

Alec Baldwin plays Gary Jonas, the sax player and oldest Jonas of the Jonas Brothers. They want him out because he drinks, smokes and is obnoxious. Unfortunately, he's not very funny. Lame start.

The Cougar Den -- 3

Casey Wilson, Kristen Wiig and Michaela Watkins play Cougars, complete with smoke ravaged voices. Alec Baldwin is a Cou-gay, an older gay gentleman. Cameron Diaz shows up again for a cameo. The only funny part of the bit is their producer making wisecracks at their expense.

Digital Short -- Property of the Queen -- 6

The embarassing video of Property of the Queen, the group the Jonas Brothers were in prior to the Jonas Brothers. The videos are amusing, but the sketch is slight.

Sir Mix-A-Lot's Photo Lab -- 4

Sir Mix A Lot will give your photos bigger butts. That's the premise of the sketch. Kenan gives it his all, but the premise isn't funny enough to sustain 30 seconds, much less a whole sketch.

Jonas Brothers - Tonight -- 7

Nice bit of Power Pop that might be even better if I didn't know it was a Disney Channel group.

Weekend Update -- 7

Some funny news related jokes this week, funnier than normal. Kenan's Oscar Rogers bit falls flat, but Michaela's blogger from BitchPleeze.com is funny for anyone who has ever read a snarky gossip site run by a loser, and Jason Sudeikis makes a funny appearance as Joaquin Phoenix.

Best Lines -- "Alex Rodriguez admitted that he took steroids, though apparently never in October."

"Today is Valentines Day, and we just want to say to all of you watching at home, better luck next year."

Vincent Price's Valentine's Day Special -- 7

Again I wonder how funny anyone under the age of 37 or so is going to find this. Bill Hader doesn't sound much like Vincent Price, but Alec Baldwin is funny as Richard Burton. Kristin Wiig does a great Carol Channing. A Liberace joke about a "strange hand sticking through a hole" is priceless, though. The sketch feels like mostly filler.

Businessmen Schedule a Meeting -- 5

Three guys try to figure out when they can schedule a meeting and have a bunch of awkward reasons they can't make a meeting. The lines would be much funnier if the cast and Alec weren't racing through them. Seems like a rewrite of the "Four Guys Sing a Song" sketch that the show keeps bringing up.

Jonas Brothers -- Video Girl -- 8

Is that a lost Cheap Trick song? Not bad.

Family Plays the wii -- 6

Alec Baldwin plays a dad trying to impress his kids by playing the wii. He's told to start shaking the wiimote and does it in a very inappropriate way. This will probably be a big viral hit, and it is amazing that the show got away with it. But it is so obvious that it truly isn't funny.

Chewable Pamers -- 6

Repeat of a previous episode's commercial. Not as funny this time.

Virgania Horsen's Hot Air Balloon Rides -- 5

A redo of a similar commercial from earlier in the show's run with cheesy low budget effects and another of Wiig's wacky characters. Time filler.

Alec Baldwin's Acting Techniques for Actors -- 5

Alec Baldwin teaches you how to master the technique of the death foreshadowing cough. Thin premise. Thin laughs.

Overall -- 5

There is something wrong when the show has Steve Martin and Alec Baldwin and can make neither of them funny. Judging by the end credits, I have to wonder if Alec didn't in someway anger the cast, since nobody seems to be standing too close to him. This show wasn't a bomb, but was a tremendous disappointment. They might have been better off making the Jonas Brothers dual guests.

A strange night for SNL. I didn't really hate anything, but apart from a few mild chuckles during the monologue and WU, I didn't really love anything either. I liked the digital short, mainly because of the 1980s-style songs (I wish the Jonas Bros really sounded like that), the VCR joke, and the wizard ending.

The rest was just so aggressively ho-hum, even the deliberately offensive "Wii" sketch. I wonder about the recurring Vincent Price sketches, since Bill Hader's impression is not exactly spot-on and this is the at least the THIRD time they've done this bit. I think it's just a chance for cast members to do random old celebrity impressions they'd otherwise never get to do.

Just watched this episode on DVR - not a single laugh in 90 minutes. Not one. Really, almost wonder if this was written to be unfunny. Pathetic.

    Another fun read. Thank you.

Man, am I glad I went out to a comedy club and saw something funny last night. I've heard those Jonas brothers songs and I think you're being overly nice (the word "suck" comes to mind, and rather quickly). I'm going to look up the videos of their SNL performances and see if they were as bad on there as they have been for every other live event I've seen them on. Question: How do people like this ever make money? If these guys were streetcorner musicians, people would give them money and request them stop playing as they pass by...
