Saturday Night Live -- Bradley Cooper & TV on the Radio -- 2/7/09

Crutnacker
Opening -- Press Conference -- Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi -- 5

Fred Armisen does Harry Reid and Kristen Wiig does Nancy Pelosi in this subdued sketch that gets its only laughs out of Nancy Pelosi getting angry about Republicans raining on her parade. Mildly amusing, but another lackluster opening.

Monologue -- Bradley Cooper
-- 7

Mr. Cooper acknowledges that most of us don't know who we are, and points out his many appearances on "Inside the Actor's Studio", as an audience member. He also demonstrates his method of being a bully, which was pretty amusing, especially the surprise cameo at the end.

Today Show -- 6

Michaela Watkins and Kathie Lee Gifford do a funny Hoda Kotb and Kathie Lee Gifford, perfectly capturing the obnoxiousness of Kathy Lee and her inability to shut up. Wiig's over the top Kathie is made funnier by Hoda Kotb's slow burn. Unfortunately, the sketch doesn't really go anywhere from there.

I'm Gonna Have Sex With Your Wife -- 6

Another in a long line of fake game show sketches on SNL. The premise here is that the host challenges the three contestants that he's "Going to Have Sex With Your Wife". He does, and all the contestants are mortified. Bradley Cooper does a good job with it, but the sketch never rises above the single joke premise, although the "home game" joke at the end is funny.

Digital Short -- Boat Ride for 3 With T-Pain -- 3

Andy Samberg does something original, a music video with bleeped profanity and a cameo by a popular artist. Well shot, but mostly just loud, and not funny at all.

Four Guys Say Awkward Things Over Mr Big's To Be With You -- 4

Bradley Cooper seems to be more relaxed than the rest of the cast in the show. Unfortunately, this sketch has lost whatever comic value it had in the previous 16 iterations, as men reveal embarrassing moments in their life over the tune "To Be With You". Their revelations are mostly crude without being that funny. Bad night tonight.

TV On The Radio -- Golden Age -- 2

Wow, this song is an arrhythmic mess, and it's giving me a headache this late at night. The sound mix is pretty bad, which may have something to do with this.

Weekend Update -- 7

Andy Samberg's appearance as Mark Spitz is a waste, but Kenan Thompson's appearance as a very winded James Harrison (who ran 100 yards for a touchdown in the Super Bowl the previous week) was probably the funniest thing he has ever done. Seth does a "Really" segment about Kellogg's dropping Michael Phelps for put use, which is funny. After giving a run down of their products, including cereal straws designed to drink leftover milk from the bowl, "Really Kellogg's, each of your products sounds like a wish a genie granted at a Phish concert". The news jokes have been slim as of late. Perhaps it is time to get Seth Myers another partner.

Funny line: (After a story on the picture of Michael Phelps smoking pot) "Suddenly the Michael Phelps diet makes a lot of sense."

Kid Meets His Hockey Idols -- 7

What starts off stupid, with Bobby Moynihan playing a little kid freaking out at seeing his beloved hockey team, suddenly turns funny when his spastic vocal tics smooth out when he meets the one player he could care less about. Much funnier than I thought it was going to be.

Bad Guys -- Good Conversations -- 7

A talk show featuring bad guys from the movies. Bradley Cooper does a great Johnny from the Karate Kid, with Jason Sudeikis playing his sensei, forcing him to "FINISH" the show. A lame premise turned into a mostly amusing sketch.

Intervention -- 5

As a family tries to do an intervention, some of the family members start using noisy pumps and sprays that interrupt the proceedings. It's incredibly stupid, but as the objects that keep making noise get more and more ridiculous there are some laughs.

TV On the Radio -- Second Song -- 7

Better than the first.

Christian Bale Promotes "No Bruce, Let Me Finish -- Best of Celebrity Tirades" -- 6

Bradley Cooper plays Christian Bale in this sketch promoting a series of celebrity tirades captured on DVD. Each of the tirades ends with "No Bruce, Let Me Finish!" Good premise, but could have been much funnier.

Overall -- 6

This episode was pretty funny, especially since it featured a guest that had many people saying, "Who?" This wasn't the best episode of the season by a long shot, but the episode featured sketches that were at least amusing.

    what a debbie downer.

By the way, I've never liked the "four guys sharing awkward memories while listening to a song" skit, and each repitition makes it much, much worse. Also, the "punchline" of the skit -- that they're at a funeral and not a wedding -- was obvious from the first second. I did, however, like the line "That guy's life is over!" -- a double entendre that might be said figuratively at a wedding or literally at a funeral. But one line does not a skit make. RETIRE THIS TROPE, SNL! NO MORE FOUR GUYS!

Mostly agree with this review. I must say, though, I did laugh at "Boat Ride" because of T-Pain's line "Never thought I'd be on a boat." There is this ridiculous association with boats being the ultimate in unattainable luxury, leading to such silly rituals as corporate booze cruises and that Zanger Bob clip on You Tube. I also liked the line about a boat being like a car on a really wide, blue road.

As for the Hockey Fan skit, it was semi-funny IN SPITE of Bobby Moynihan and his awful "It's okay?" would-be catchprhase. The audience clearly got tired of that line being repeated, and by the end of the skit it was met with deadly silence.

The "bad guys" talk show sketch was a really contrived and weak premise, but Bill Hader -- bless his heart -- worked overtime to make it funny.

Overall, though, big improvement over last week.
