Saturday Night Live: Lost and Found- SNL in the 80s Dvd Review

Vincent Gioia
Saturday Night Live was a blockbuster in the 1970's. When 1980 rolled around, all of the original cast members were gone, along with producer Lorne Micheals. All the absences doomed SNL from the start. You get to see all the lows, and a few highs for SNL in the 1980s. There's a documentary and an extra feature documentary.

The documentary explains each year of the decade. From the cast members, to different writers and producers. They explained what happened each year, with either controversy or bad ratings. They talk about the behind the scenes of each year. You get to hear from Lorne Micheals, Dick Ebersol, Joe Piscopo, Julia Louis Dreyfuss, Billy Crystal, Martin Short, Jon Lovitz, Kevin Nealon, Dana Carvey, Jim Belushi, Al Franken, Conan O Brian, and Gilbert Gottfried. They also mix scenes and music into the documentary.

Extra Feature Documentary

They show more scenes, and talk about the behind the scenes stuff. Like smoking pot, battling the censorship, making fun of political figures, working for Lorne Michaels, SNL being a boys club, the lacking of strong roles for women, lack of black comedy, Damon Wayons renegade move, and the SNL legacy.

There are a few flaws on here, that hurt this release. There are no perspectives from Eddie Murphy, Denis Miller, and Michael Myers. There are no complete sketches, or musical performances on here. This was very disappointing to me, because I thought they would have full sketches that would make me laugh.

Overall, I am mixed on this dvd. I liked the documentaries, because they helped explain why SNL was unpopular during the 1980's. The perspectives and interviews were rock solid. I am disappointed, because I felt misled from the title, and the description on the back. I was misled from the title, because I thought they would put alot of complete and funny sketches on here, that people have missed or forgotten. I was misled from the description on the back, because it said there would be musical performances on here. There are, but there cut and incomplete. After all that said, I still think this is a good pick up and worth to check out.
