Saturday Ramblings

Karen Gros
Today is Saturday, a day off work. It also means running errands and getting things done around the house. Today I was looking forward to the new Farmer's Market that was to open in town today from 7:00 am till 2:00 pm. Funny how such a small thing is really a big thing in a small country town.

My husband decided to ride into town with me today because he needed to pick up a couple of clamps at the auto parts store. We decided to go there first since the auto parts store closes at noon. You heard right. Everything in town closes at noon here. It's a small town in the country and the business people in town take the afternoon off.

After stopping at the auto parts store, we rode on down the main street of town looking for the new Farmer's Market. The sign didn't state where it would be located but we figured near the heart of town. Wrong. We next went back to the corner where the sign was placed. We found the Farmer's Market right there in the parking lot of the bookstore/diner/tea shop.

There were only three vendors there. The first vendor was an older man who had fresh cucumbers and live rabbits. The rabbits were not exactly being sold as pets, but for eating. My husband asked if I wanted a rabbit to cook and I gave him the evil eye while saying "no thank you". He proceeded to pick out five cucumbers that came to a buck. Not bad!

The next table was selling fresh grown tomatoes. Tomatoes were what I was looking for as I had planned on bacon, lettuce and tomato sandwiches for lunch. I picked out four tomatoes, two large and two medium sized ones. My total came to $3.75. I was a bit disappointed in the price, and even more so, when I sliced the first tomato an hour later to find that it had a rotten spot in the center. My husband got a much better deal on the cucumbers!

The third and last booth set up was a lady selling homemade canned jelly. I didn't need any jelly and the hubster is diabetic so we skipped that booth. From the sign posted, the jelly wasn't that much of a good deal either at $3.75 for a small jar.

I hope this small Farmer's Market continues and I hope other vendors show up to sell their surplus garden vegetables. This is a great concept with farmers making a few extra bucks and the customers coming home with fresh grown vegetables. With more vendors attending the pricing should also even out a bit. Even though this wasn't exactly what I was expected it was fun and promises to become a larger venture.

For dinner tonight I guess we will slice into another tomato and see if it is also bad. I'll be cooking up some fresh squash in a quick stir fry and freshly sliced tomatoes and cucumbers would be a nice compliment to the meal.

Good luck with the other Tomatoes. Maybe someone came along and took the rabbits and adopted them as pets.
