Sault Sainte Marie's Three Best Places for a Burger

Mikel Classen
One of the things that is appealing about Sault Sainte Marie, Michigan, is that there are some exquisite burgers made by the local eateries. I find that, for me, a truly good burger can be more satisfying than a steak dinner. Which are the best? Let's bite into a few burgers and see. I know it's a tough job, but somebody's got to do it.

West Pier Drive-In

This little place is truly an "off the beaten path" find. It is situated under the Ambassador Bridge to Canada on West Pier Drive, next to the Saint Mary's River. Their cheeseburger will send you into another plane of burger appreciation. Their thick juicy 1/3 pound of meat, seems more like a half-pound, is cooked to perfection every time. Its cost is under $5.00 and I personally like to get mine with the traditional condiments of ketchup, mustard, onion and relish. This is a delicious, huge burger for the price and if you're feeling real adventurous get a double for an extra 1.50 and double its size. Add a little bacon and burger heaven.

Clyde's Drive-In

This Drive-In is located on the Sainte Mary's River on the other end of town from West Pier. Follow the signs on Portage Ave. to the Sugar Island Ferry and you can't miss it. Many waiting for the ferry enjoy a quick stop here while they're waiting. They serve the "Big C" burger. This burger extravaganza is ¾ of a pound of meat and can be enjoyed in any form your heart desires. I myself like it with the deluxe condiments and with everything. This burger is juicy and most folks would be lucky to completely finish one. The price is under $8.00 and it rocks.

Dondee Lanes

OK, I know what you're thinking, a bowling alley right? Well, the Dondee does it right when It comes to a burger. They get fresh ground meat from Neville's Meat Market, a local market that has the reputation of the Sault's finest meat. The burger here is under $6,00, is 1/3 pound and can be made to any specifications. I like mine with bacon and sautéed mushrooms and onions. That's right, at a bowling alley.

These three places top my list and no place around can compare with them. Stop by, check them out and judge for yourself.
