Ingredients
Serves 8
1 lb breakfast sausage
10 slices bread
6 eggs
2 1/4 C milk, divided
3 tbsp butter
3 tbsp flour
1 cup sharp cheddar cheese
Directions for Sausage Breakfast Strata
1
Preheat oven to 375 degrees.2
Cube bread slices and spread evenly in the bottom of a lightly greased 9" x 13" pan.3
In a medium-sized bowl, whisk eggs with 1/4 cup milk until well combined. Pour over bread cubes and let soak while you make your sausage gravy.4
Crumble sausage and cook over medium high heat in a 9" skillet. When sausage is browned, transfer to a paper towel-lined bowl to drain excess grease.5
Over medium heat, melt butter. Whisk in flour. Slowly add 2 cups milk, whisking the entire time to avoid lumps. Let cook until thickened and bubbly. Turn off heat and stir in cooked sausage.6
Pour sausage gravy evenly over bread and egg mixture. Sprinkle cheese over top.7
Cover tightly with foil and bake at 375 degrees for 30-35 minutes. Cut into squares and serve.Tip
While Sausage Breakfast Strata is technically a breakfast meal, my family likes it for dinner, too. As a bonus, the leftovers reheat nicely for lunch the next day.
