Savannah, Georgia - the Antebellum Beauty

Ava Marie
Visiting the city of Savannah Georgia is like taking a step back in time. The charm and southern hospitality make you feel welcome. Savannah stood through the American Revolution, was captured by Sherman during the Civil War, has faced hurricanes, fires and outbreaks of yellow fever. History has not hurt this breathtaking city, it is still filled with beauty, hauntings, and excitement.

In the historic district, streets are shaded with live oaks draped with Spanish moss. Horses trot down the cobblestone streets pulling happy tourists or locals in love. The houses are spectacular, most dating back to the 1700's. Revival, Federal, Victorian and Italianate houses line most of the downtown historic district. Vivid colors and magnificent detail make these some of the most stunning homes in America. Much of Savannah has been restored over time, but even the hotels, shops and restaurants through out t he historic district were designed to blend in with the Antebellum feel of the city.

With so much history, it is no surprise that Savannah is the most haunted city in the US. The stories of hauntings in Savannah are many. The Kehoe house, Colonial park cemetery, The Pink house restaurant, and the Marshall house are only a few of the dozens of eerie hauntings in Savannah. There are Ghost tours to see all these chilling places. Not only do they tell the sad stories of these "ghosts", they bring the people on the tours inside to experience the hauntings for themselves.

Entertainment and nightlife in Savannah is unbeatable. River Street is lined with bars and clubs of all genres, from blues to jazz and everything in between. Because being outside provides just as much entertainment as the bars, the city allows people to bring alcoholic beverages anywhere in the historic district. Street performers fill the streets, musicians play for anyone who will listen and mighty tug boats pull ships into the harbor. The sites on River street keep people coming back time and time again.

Finding something to do in Savannah is easy. Getting yourself to leave is the hard part. Savannah is like a beautiful poem, it takes you away. Away from the hassles of modern life, and back to a simpler time. The sights, the steamy air that smells like magnolias. Since 1733, this small coastal city has been winning peoples hearts. 277 years later she can still take your breath away.
