Savannah, Georgia is essentially a tourist town, and a good one. There are many places to go if you're looking for a good time, for adults and children, so don't worry that you won't be able to find something to do!
There are a wide range of tours available in Savannah, both historical and 'haunted'. The historical trolley tour is just that - a trolley tour that takes you to several of the most historical places found in Savannah. The haunted trolley tour is almost the same as the historical tour, as it visits many of the same places, but it is dedicated to telling about all the haunted places found in the town, and there are quite a few. According to the locals, Savannah is the most haunted city in the world after all.
Another tour that's available is the horse drawn carriage tour. This tour tells about Savannah in general: who founded it, who the first settlers were, what it was like for those first settlers, and other general information about the town. It even tells about the history of the bricks that some of the streets are still paved in! Now, that may not seem interesting to some, but Savannah is the only place in the world that these particular bricks can be found, and are worth about $200 each, or more, because of their rarity and durability. No one has been able to replicate them because when the maker died, he took the recipe to the grave with him.
Those are just a few of the family tours that can be found in Savannah. I couple of other, more adult only tours are also available, and include the haunted hearse tour, and the bar/tavern tour. You should be more than able to find a tour to catch your interest!
However, if you're looking for a little more excitement than can be found with the tours, then River Street is just the place for you. River Street is the most historical part of Savannah to be found. Situated right beside the Savannah River, River Street is a story lower than the rest of Savannah. There is no parking on River Street though, so you need to find parking on the streets above and walk down using the stairs provided, or by walking down the road. If you want, you can drive down the street, but be warned, it's a bumpy ride! The street is still paved in the original cobblestones, and even has the original trolley tracks running down the center of the road. If you decide to park on the streets above and walk down, be sure to have plenty of quarters handy - there are parking meters everywhere. Be sure to put a considerable amount of time on the meter, because once you're on River Street, you're going to be spending of plenty of time there.
River Street is the place to go if you're looking to buy souvenirs, or just to watch other people having fun. The entire street is lined with shops that sell almost anything you could want. There's even two candy stores for anyone with a sweet tooth for old fashioned candies. The shops are usually crowded, but the people are all friendly and good-natured, keeping the pushing and shoving to a minimum. And if you get hungry while shopping, there are plenty of places for you to stop and eat along the way.
For those that love the water, there's plenty of boat tours available as well. You're guaranteed to see dolphins if you decide to take the dolphin tour. You can even rent kayaks if you want a slightly more personal experience on the water or, if you would prefer to see the river at night, you can go on a couple of river cruises. One is the Paranormal Supper Cruise, and the other is the Murder Mystery Cruise. Both take place at night on a three or four storied river boat.
Over all, there is a considerable amount of fun to be had in historical Savannah, Georgia, for all ages, and you're sure to be able to take home a number of mementos to remember your time there. Just be sure to leave the moss alone, or you could bring home more than you expected, even if you're a non-believer in the paranormal. The most is said to be just as haunted as the town itself. Enjoy!
