Savannahs - the People Loving Houdini Cat Breed

Georgia Lund

Savannahs are an obscure cat breed only known for their larger size, but even that notion is not accurate as not all Savannahs are large. This cat breed is people oriented, full of energy, smart and curious. Often called 'Houdini cats' because of their expert ability to get into anything they want.

Breed Basics

Savannahs look like small wild cats because of their traceable bloodline to the African Serval, but the wild side has been bred out of the breed and they are completely docile and domesticated. Unfortunately the breed is not currently eligible for cat show competitions. Savannahs come in solid black, black smoke, brown spotted tabby and silver spotted tabby.

Savannahs have large ears and are slightly taller and longer than a standard housecat in most instances, however like any animal breed, each Savannah is unique. The longer legs of the Savannahs make it a very agile and athletic cat.

Savannahs are an overall healthy cat breed with no known genetic health issues. One of the best outward features of the Savannahs is that it sheds very little and requires little in the way of grooming.

Savannahs' Disposition

It's lovey-dovey playtime all the time with Savannahs. Theses cats love people and want to be around their owners constantly, unlike standard housecats who need their 'me' time.

Savannahs don't have needy dispositions, but they do expect a large chunk of their owner's attention daily for interactive playtime. A Savannah will have no qualms of jumping into a bubble bath with their owner to get the human interaction time they crave. When owner's of Savannahs work away from home for long periods of time, it's best to adopt two so they can entertain each other during the long periods of absence.

Just as smart as they are affectionate, Savannahs take great joy in methodically discovering how to break into or out of something. This cat breed has a great problem solving ability, combined with strength and agility, which makes placing some things behind lock and key a necessity in the home. Food items can't be left on the countertop or simply placed inside a kitchen cabinet, a Savannah would get the food, open it and take one bite out of every item just to prove that he could. Food, medications, cleaning products all have to kept behind child-proof locks in order to keep the Savannah out.
