Save Up to 50% on Your Back to School Shopping

Creative and Simple Ways to Save Money on School Shopping

Eisla Sebastian

I am all about saving money when it comes to back to school shopping. As a single parent I don't have a lot of money to spend on back to school clothing and supplies so I take advantage of every money-saving opportunity that I can find. Over the years I have found some fun and creative ways for cutting my back to school bill by nearly 50%.

Tip #1 - Special Event Savings

One of my favorite ways to save money is to attend special back-to-school shopping events. These events usually are held during early morning hours or after the regular store hours have concluded. During the special shopping time the store will give away special coupons and offer special discounts on clothing and school supplies. These sales can easily save you between 25 and 50% off your clothing bill for the new school year.

Tip #2 - Participate in Back-to-School Promotions

In my community the local mall holds a fashion show that is put on by the stores found within the mall. The kids that act as models for the fashion show get their outfit for free. This is a fun way that your kids can earn their back-to-school clothing.

Tip #3 - Take Advantage of Bulk Deals

Warehouse stores, outlet malls and even office supply mail order stores offer great deals on bulk orders. You can save up to 50% on individual items if you can buy in bulk. If bulk buying is not something that is practical for your situation, then get together with other parents in your social circle and pool your buying power. You can stock up on supplies and reap great deals.

Tip #4 - Shop Vintage

I love shopping at thrift and second hand stores for back to school items. These stores offer great deals on gently used clothing, shoes, outerwear and even on new school supply items. The key to shopping at thrift stores is to go often, to have an idea about what you want and need and to thoroughly examine each item you select.

Tip #5 - Learn to Sew

Knowing how to sew can help you to both create low cost fashion-forward pieces from scratch, as well as help you to update hand-me-downs. I have used this option since I was a kid and it has allowed me to save thousands of dollars over the years. What I need to caution you about, however, is that if you are not careful you can end up spending more making your own clothes than buying them. To save money you need to price your options before deciding what to do, buy or sew.
