Elisabeth Leamy is one of the experts in the field of saving BIG money. Maybe you've seen her on TV, she is a Consumer Correspondent for Good Morning America. She doesn't go for the small savings that most people suggest like cutting out lattes or canceling magazine subscriptions. She goes for the savings of thousands of dollars - anything less than that didn't make the cut in this book.
The BIG savings in this book target on our top five costs: houses, cars, credit, groceries and healthcare. Leamy says, "The key is to identify the areas where you spend the most money, because that's where you can save the most money."
Here are some examples of how to save BIG with Leamy's tips:
Fight the "junk closing costs" when you purchase a new home and save $2,530. Refinance your current mortgage into a shorter mortgage and save $103,536. She even gives tips on how to appeal your property taxes and save $1,265 per year!
Don't buy the most popular make and model of a car and save $6,814. Pay for your car in cash and save $2,608 (or more). She even gives tips on a "secret warranty" where a dealer fixes the flaws on that car for free and saves you $1,400!
Guarding your credit score can save you $2,916 per year on your mortgage alone. Negotiating for a lower credit card interest rate can save you $1,272. Plus she offers many more credit saving tips.
Groceries is a big expense if totaled up throughout the year, and she gives many tips on saving in this area as well. For instance, price matching can save $4,628 a year! Stockpile what is on sale and that can save another $5,772!
Healthcare is a huge expense as well, and she gives some insightful tips in this area as well. However, this is more on a personal basis as everyone's is different. Taking an over the counter version of a drug instead of a prescription (or a generic brand of a prescription) can save over $1,763 per year!
Save BIG is a tremendous source of savings for you, the consumer. I learned many things from reading this book on how to save BIG rather than save small. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is looking to save thousands or possibly millions in a lifetime by just some simple adjustments to what you do.
