If you live in the San Diego area and are looking for a less expensive Sea World with the same great fun, check out the Chula Vista Nature Center located at 1000 Gunpowder Point Dr. Chula Vista, CA 91910. It is situated on Sweetwater Marsh Wildlife Refuge on San Diego Bay. All of the plants and animals exhibited at the zoo/aquarium are native to the area. Some of these include sea turtles, sting rays, sea horses, exotic eagles (even the American bald eagle!) and many more. Just as you can touch the sting rays at Sea World, you can do the same at the nature center!

The first time I heard about this place was on a morning news show. The reason why the nature center was being mentioned was due to the fact that it was on the verge of closing its doors. As a mother of an infant daughter and advocate for educational services, I wanted to do something to keep this place in business. I planned a visit the next weekend and was stunned to know the city wanted to close them down. Saying this is a hidden treasure is an understatement. When I was looking for it, I thought I was lost because all there is at first is a parking lot. However, there is a free shuttle bus that takes you straight to the nature center from the parking lot. The buildings themselves seem small and they are, but the quality of entertainment outweighs this.

As a means of salvaging the nature center, the "Save the Chula Vista Nature Center" website periodically posts updated statistics on what's being done to keep the center open. Their opening line reads "Due to the budget crisis within the City of Chula Vista, there is a proposal by the City's administration team to completely close the Chula Vista Nature Center as early as July 1, 2009." The city of Chula Vista is a jewel with so many hidden restaurants, neighborhoods and entertainment. It is a shame that this city is losing its appeal amid the state's economic crisis. The nature center is taking a big hit as a result.

They also give special offers throughout San Diego if you sign up as a member. For example, during the month of April all members can get into the Museum of San Diego History in Balboa Park for free!

The hours of operation are from 10:00 A.M. - 5:00 P.M. Tuesday through Sunday.
