Attending college means a lot of expenses for the student. Sure everybody thinks of the big ones like tuition, but the expense for buying necessary textbooks for your courses is often the most overlooked. Saving 50% to 80% on textbooks is not out of the question if you are prepared, and you know when and where to look. In this article you'll find nine surefire tips to get your textbooks cheap.

1. Register for classes as early as you can. As soon as the directory becomes available to you, try searching for your classes. If you know what books you need early you can usually get them cheap. On the other hand waiting till the last second, will usually yield higher book prices.

2 Before you buy anything find out what books you need for your classes. Using the campus bookstore just to browse around can be a good thing for your wallet. Look for your course's required books and write down the price of new and used versions. If any particular book isn't in yet you can always asked the bookstore staff as to when that book will be. Usually campus bookstores also have a web site to read and get this information, or you can look on your classes web pages.

3. Sometimes you can get the books in the library without even having to pay for them. Check your universities library or if you can't find it there check the local public library. Most university libraries will allow you to check out and renew books for the whole semester, which will save you in that extra expense of buying that one book.

4. The Internet can be your friend when trying to find cheap textbooks. For instance, just do a search on any search engine for the keyword cheap textbooks. On many search engine's you will see ads running that may say something like 90% off textbooks. You can also do a search for the books ISBN number. This will return many exacts results, then all you have to do is verify that it is the right book and purchase it if the buying price is something reasonable.

5. Remember shopping online, most likely just about any price you'll find will be better than at your campus bookstore. Check as many sites as possible. Don't forget sites like eBay or other online marketplaces where you can usually find just about anything including textbooks.

6. You may also be able to find some deals at local bookstores. Shopping online is nice but sometimes the shipping prices will get you. If you can find a book locally and just as cheap, you can avoid the shipping costs.

7. Finding used books is a great way to cut costs on your textbooks. The one thing you want to make sure you do is verify that the book is in good condition before you buy. As with anything, compare prices and find the best deals. Another bonus of buying used books is that they usually have notes from the previous owner. Maybe you'll get lucky and will have gotten a bookworm's textbook. You won't have to take notes all semester!

8. Use online social sites such as MySpace or Facebook to inquire about previously owned books. Due to the social nature of these sites, anyone is lible to see your inquiry, giving you a better chance to find a book that you need.

9. At the end of the semester you can always resell your books and recoup some of the initial cost. Usually the earlier you resell it, the more you'll get. Try to keep your books in good condition throughout the semester, so at the end of the semester your campus bookstore will be happy to take them off your hands. Don't forget just as you can find books online, you can also sell them. But remember, the person you sell it to will be looking for a deal just as you were.

Buying college textbooks can be two things: an enjoyable experience, or a completely miserable endeavor. Remember, the main thing you need to do is get your books early. If you do this and follow the nine tips above, in almost all cases you'll be able to find your textbooks very cheap and save yourself from taking out the extra five or $600 loan.
