Save Darfur Rally: A Rememberance of the Past and Call to Action

On Sunday, April 19, 2009, 110 weary-eyed, but excited Pittsburghers rose at 3 and 4 AM to make the trip to meet 3 buses in Squirrel Hill. Destination: Washington, DC, The purpose: A rally to urge President Obama to keep his promise to end the genocide in Darfur. The trip was sponsored by the Pittsburgh Darfur Emergency Coalition, a division of the Save Darfur International and was part of their ongoing campaign to end the violence in South Africa.

The violence in Darfur has destroyed 2,751 villages, displaced over 290,000 civilians, and killed many more, according to Save Darfur International. Nearly 4 million civilians are now in dire need of humanitarian aid. Basic necessities are a luxury and continued conflict and interference from the government has inhibited the ability of humanitarian organizations to provide needed care.

The International Criminal Court has issued an arrest warrant for Sudanese President Omar Al Bashir. In retaliation, Al Bashir expelled humanitarian organizations from the region, making it even more difficult to provide sufficient and much needed medical care, food and water to the civilians. The rally focused on a call to action from President Obama to make the situation in Darfur a priority in his administration.

The rally, entitled "Honor the Past, Act Now for Darfur", included speeches by survivors of past genocides including the Holocaust, Rawanda, Cambodia, Bosnia and Darfur/Sudan. As part of a symbolic tribute, activists carried black and white signs with the names of destroyed villages. Pittsburghers turned out in especially high volume, filling 3 buses with high school students and adults alike. Pittsburgh Darfur Emergency Coalition coordinator, Dave Rosenburg also spoke at the event, along with Pittsburgher and Holocaust survivor Herman Snyder.

The trip included a memorable visit to the International Holocaust Museum and was timed to coincide with President Obama's speech at the museum on April 23. More information on how you can get involved and to view photos, speeches and essays of Sunday's event, go to www.savedarfur.org.
