Save on Energy Costs with Air Conditioner Maintenance

Air Conditioner Maintenance to Help You Stay Cool This Summer

Violet Rose
A working air conditioner is the key to staying cool in the hot summer weather. Performing air conditioner maintenance can extend the life of your air conditioner, as well as lower the cost of cooling your home.

Central air conditioner units should be inspected yearly. All ducts should be inspected to be sure they are well sealed and insulated. Condenser coils need to be checked also and cleared of grass, dust or any other debris. This will help the air conditioner run more efficiently, helping to keep the cost down. If cleaning the coils yourself, check the manual for instructions. Air conditioner filters should be checked frequently and cleaned or replaced if needed. During the highest periods of use, check the filters monthly.

In the spring, put your air conditioner to a test. Turn it on and run it for an hour or two and see if it works properly. Make a specific note of anything that doesn't seem right and call an HVAC contractor for an inspection. Consider having a yearly check done by a professional. A professional contractor can check many things home owners may not able to checkon their own. The following should be checked during an annual inspection: Thermostat, electrical/ wire connections, blower belt, refrigerant (freon) levels and adjustment if necessary, condensor drains, blower belt, fan blades, and compressor.

Keep the area around a central air conditioner unit clear of plants that may obstruct the air flow. An air conditioner located in a shady area will use less energy. Consider locating the air conditioner near a tree or even an outside umbrella, being sure the air flow is not obstructed. It is not necessary to cover the outside air conditioner unit during the winter, as they are designed for being outside in the elements.

A window air conditioner also needs to be checked yearly, with condensers and filters cleaned as needed. Also, it is important to note that a window air conditioner should be located away from appliances that produce heat, which decrease the efficiency of the unit. Such appliances include televisions, stereos, microwaves and other electrical appliances. Avoid hanging plants or anything else directly over the air condition. Placing the window air conditioner in a shady side of the house, if possible, will also decrease the cost of running it.

Whatever type of cooling system you have, regular air conditioner maintenance can extend its life and keep you cool for years to come.

Very good advice. Nothing like comfort and saving money all at the same time.
