Save Gas and Make Your Car More Fuel Efficient

10 Tips on How to Improve Gas Mileage

Not everyone can afford to buy a new car that is more fuel efficient but there are ways to improve your gas mileage on any vehicle. Every time you turn on your vehicle you also decrease the gas in your tank. With gas prices constantly on the rise it is important to think about saving on gas by making a car more fuel efficient. Here are some ways to save money on gas.

Tip 1: Use your air conditioning sparingly! It burns a lot of extra gas. If possible, air out your car before you get in, roll your windows down and open the sunroof while driving. Never let the car run idle to heat or cool it before driving.

Tip 2: Turn off your engine if you will be parked for more than 5 minutes. Not only is it a waste of gas, especially with the air conditioning running, but it is also an unnecessary environmental hazard.

Tip 3: Keep on your engine if you will be parked for less than 5 minutes. Idling will use less gas than starting up the engine for that short amount of time only.

Tip 4: Increase gas mileage by emptying out your car. Extra weight costs extra gas and keeping unnecessary items in our trunk or backseat will make the vehicle heavier. This is a good reason to clean out that clutter.

Tip 5: Drive when roads are clear. Avoid rush hour with stop and go traffic. City driving guzzles gas. Driving at steady speeds is most fuel efficient because you don't have to accelerate all the time.

Tip 6: Use your garage or park in the shade. Not only will you be able to step into a cooler car but leaving your car bake in the sun causes more evaporation from your gas tank.

Tip 7: Properly tighten your gas cap. If your gas cap does not properly close it will cause gas to constantly evaporate into the air.

Tip 8: Fill up early in the morning or late in the evening when temperatures are lowest. Gas is more dense at lower temperatures and the pump only measures amount of gas in volume, not how dense it its. This means you will get more gas when it is cold. Gas also evaporates faster at higher temperatures resulting in more loss that way also.

Tip 9: Make sure your tires are always properly inflated. Improperly inflated tires waste gas and can be a safety hazard. They will also wear down faster.

Tip 10: Always keep your car in tip top shape. A clogged air filter will make the engine work harder rendering it less fuel efficient. Watch out for worn spark plugs and make sure you are using the proper oil for your vehicle. A well maintained vehicle will get you better gas mileage.
