First, ask your pediatrician if your baby has any special formula needs. There are some conditions that may require your infant to only receive certain brands or varieties of formula. Some of these conditions may be a milk allergy, jaundice, or reflux.
Now that you know what formula options are availabe for your infant, price shop. Compare that type of formula with all the brands that carry it. Be sure to include store brands. Store brands usually have the same ingredients as the name brands. The ingredients are listed on the container for you to compare. When comparing prices, take notes and compare like sizes. You will quickly see that the store brands are much cheaper than name brands.
However, with coupons and checks, the name brand formula will become much more affordable. To receive checks and coupons for formula, register at the websites of the formula companies. These are usually just the name of the brand followed by dot com. Do this before your baby arrives, even. Checks, coupons, and even free samples will begin arriving at the same time as your little one.
Note the difference between a coupon and a check. The checks are exactly that, a check. They will likely have your name on them. The cashier will run it through the machine just like a regular check and the money will be deducted from your bill. Here's the beautiful thing, if you also have a coupon, you can use both on the same container of formula! So find as many checks and coupons as you can.
Next, think small. If you're using coupons and/or checks, buy the smaller container of powder formula. You will get the most bang for your buck this way. You may even get a 12.9 ounce can of formula for as little as $1.50. That's better than spending $11 on a bigger can. Just get lots of small cans if you have lots of coupons and checks.
Lastly, hunt for free samples. The brand name formula companies always have samples to give away because they are fiercely competing for your business. You can find them at the hospital and at your pediatrician's office.
