Save Money when Buying a Car

Besides our homes and our education, our vehicles are generally one of the most expensive purchase we will all make. Finding ways to save money on a car can help lessen the blow to your bank account.

Check your credit score before you begin your search. This way you can clean up any discrepancies or bad debt before you begin applying for loans.

Research what you want before you go out. Look at the gas mileage and how much it will cost to repair the vehicle. Think about the type of car you actually need to save money, instead of only what you want. If you are single with no children or pets then you may want to look at smaller cars over large SUV's.

Save for the full cost of the car or a very large down payment. A large down payment will help you pay less in interest over the life of the loan, which in turn saves you money. If a newer car isn't an absolute must then waiting 6 months or a year while you save up will help you financially for not only this car, but many cars down the road.

Consider an older, used car to save money. A car a few years old should still be in good mechanical shape without the new car price. Even a used car a year or two old will mean you save the money that the person who bought it new off the lot didn't. You may also have lower insurance payments on the vehicle.

Call your insurance agent before you purchase a vehicle. The cost of your auto insurance can be affected by the make, model and year of your vehicle. These costs should be factored into the cost of purchasing a car as you will have to pay for these items as will as the loan payment. Check with several insurance agents and be willing to switch as another agent may have a better deal and purchasing a new car is always a good reminder to shop around.
