Save Money This Christmas By Cutting Some Hidden Expenses

Rachel Soden
I don't know how it is in your household this year, but for the majority of Americans, Christmas is going to be a tight one this year. When you can't pay your mortgage and creditors are calling you, it's easy to get stressed out about lack of money and not being able to get the iPods, Nintendo Wii, xBox, laptop computers and cell phones for Christmas this year. This doesn't mean you have to have a terrible Christmas this year.

The first thing that you need to do is explain. Sit down with your kids and explain to them that you can't afford to buy them a lot this year. Not only will it increase their understanding of what this Christmas will be like but it will also give them an insight into how the financial world really works. If you have small children who believe in Santa, I've found that a lot of times its quantity that they notice. If they find a whole lot presents under the tree, they are happy. They don't have to be expensive though. Wrap presents individually to make it appear there is more than there actually is.

Any way that you can save money in the coming weeks will make the holiday season that much easier. Here are a few ideas on how to save money for Christmas.

-Seasonal work. I know. Nobody wants a second job. However, retailers always need an extra set of hands during the Christmas season.

-Go online. There are many ways to make money on the internet. Write articles, start a blog, and fill out surveys. Just make sure you don't get scammed. If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

-Go homemade. Create homemade gifts to hand out. Homemade doesn't always mean cheap though. Make sure that the end product isn't more expensive than it's retail counterpart.

-Bake. Have an office party coming up? I know of no other present that goes over better than a box full of candy, cookies and confectionary goodness.

-Shop online. You can get good deals online. I don't mean online retailers. I mean websites like eBay or Etsy. This allows you to get good deals while putting money in the hands of other individuals as opposed to the CEOs that already have plenty.

-Watch out for shipping and handling. Shopping online at retailers can seem appealing. It's cold out. Gas is expensive. Crowds are heavy. It's tempting to shop online. However, those shipping and handling fees add up. You may find that its costing you more in the long run.
