Here are several easy tips to save money on your families grocery budget, so read on and get ready to get shopping!
1. Buy the cow. Seriously, my family just purchased a quarter of a cow from a local farmer. Not only are we supporting local farmers, observing the hundred mile rule, but we are also paying about two dollars a pound for everything from ground beef to fillet mignon. We are able to afford to be able to eat meat on a regular basis and although we spent a bit upfront, we save money in the long run because weekly grocery trips are all vegetables.
2. Have you ever thought of Aldi's for groceries? Aldi's has the best prices around on produce. Where else can you find avocados for only fifty cents each.
3. If you have a local vendors market you really need to check it out. My family goes to the Westside Market on a weekly basis. We actually go an hour or two before closing because we can bargain with the farmers and produce vendors. They really do not want to take a box of peppers home, and I can definitely use them. They are delicious on the grill, and a crunchy treat for my children.
4. If you don't coupon it is time to start. Spending a dollar on your Sunday paper can save you ten or twenty dollars a week on groceries. Just make sure that you are only buying things your family really needs. Just because you have a coupon for a cereal doesn't mean you will be saving money on it if no one in your family eats it.
5. Make a list and stick too it. If you make a weekly list of all of the meals you are planning and all of the ingredients that you will need for the meals you will have less waste, and spend a lot less money on impulse buying.
6. Never shop when your hungry. It's really the only time you will think pork rinds sound delicious.
7. The outside perimeter of the grocery store contains the healthiest and most cost efficient foods. Avoid the aisles and you will avoid temptation not only for your waistline, but also for your wallet.
Your family can eat well on a budget. With planning you may find that not only are you saving money on your groceries, but you family is actually enjoying better meals. Just because you have to tighten your spending does not mean you have to go back to the college days of Ramen noodles.

Okay...I seriously never thought of actually buying the cow. Great ideas. Thanks, Robin! :)
Excellent, useful advice!
Good information!
LOVE this article. I actually buy a lot of my food from a place called "Health Hutt" which is an organic food store downtown here in Grand Rapids. It's insanely cheap and I'm getting a lot better variety and a lot healthier foods for a LOT cheaper. I didn't know there were Aldis that sold fresh produce though; ours only has canned goods and boxed goods... And occasionally some frozens but not often. I thought the new super Walmart that opened up here would have been cheaper than my local grocery stores but they were WAY more expensive - especially with milk and meat... It was insane! 8 bucks at Walmart or 4.99 at my grocery for the same product... Insane.
Great article. I don't think I could stor a quarter of a cow though.
thrifty ideas!
Excellent, excellent ideas and tips and I really like Aldi's. Thanks for a superb article!
Excellent tips! We buy a lot of our groceries from a local butcher/grocer these days, we get wonderful local meats and foods and for much cheaper than the big chain grocery store across the street.
Great Tips. Great Work.
