Save Money on Your Grocery Bill

Shyla Martin
If you head off in your car with twenty-five dollars in your pocket, what can you expect to get with it? Not much! You could buy one DVD, or one and a half CDs (maybe), or a half tank of gas (if you're lucky), but what can you buy at the grocery store? At my local grocery store, even with the help of coupons, sales, and one much worn Kroger Plus Card, twenty-five dollars will not buy much of anything (especially if it has any nutritional value). A loaf of bread, a gallon of milk, some lunch meat, cheese, a few cans of soup, and juice are about all you can expect to bring home.

Because the cost of food is quickly increasing, the problem will steadily get worse; however there is a way to ensure that twenty-five dollars will get a lot. Angel food Ministries is an organization with the goal of bringing high quality, nutritional food to the masses for a very affordable price. Once a month, distribution sites in thirty-four states fill boxes with meat, chicken, vegetables (both fresh and canned), staples (such as pancake mix, rice, peanut butter, and beans), and desserts. How much does one of these bargain boxes cost? Just twenty-five dollars.

One box will not keep a family fed for an entire month, but there is no limit to how many boxes you can buy. You simply order the number of boxes you want, and on distribution day bring your empty boxes to fill. Once you order from Angel Food Ministries, you are under no obligation to continue buying food boxes. In fact, Angel Food Ministries posts their monthly menus in advance, so you can choose which months that you want to participate.

Another great feature is convenience. Unlike other food programs such as the Food Stamp and the Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) programs, Angel food Ministries does not require you to write a book about your life. You want won't have to fill out a sheaf of papers divulging how much you make or where you live. You also won't have to schedule a yearly appointment at the Welfare office to prove that your circumstances haven't changed. Anyone from any background, with any income, is more than welcome to take part. Angel food Ministries also accepts food stamps, so virtually everyone can take advantage of this deal.

You're probably wondering how you can sign up. It's really easy. Check out their website: www.angelfoodministries.com. In addition to checking out their monthly menu, this website offers a list of participating states. Key in your zip code, and they tell you the closest pick up center. They also give information on how you can help with this great organization.
