Save Money on Holiday Gifts

Jana D
The holiday season is fast approaching. If you love giving gifts but dread having to spend money, this article is for you. With a little savvy shopping, an imagination and creative thinking, you can find wonderful holiday gifts - without breaking your wallet - that your family and friends will adore.

The first the first thing to keep in mind is, does it really matter how much you paid for a gift or where you purchased it at. Most people shop at the local malls or popular department stores during the holidays. But you do not have to. If you already have a gift in mind for someone, your first option is to check out the online auction sites, such as ebay. There are millions of items just waiting to snatched up by one lucky bidder. That bidder could be you. Be careful, do not get carried away with bidding fever. Remember your only there to help save money.

The next solution that comes to mind is, start your shopping as early in the year as possible. When you are out and about at your regular shopping venues, keep your eyes open. You never know when you are going to find someone's favorite perfume on sale at a discounted price. Finding items on sale can always help you save money.

A lot of people love receiving gift baskets. Instead of spending money buying baskets that are already put together, do it yourself. Assembling your own gift baskets can help you save money

and add a thoughtful touch to your gifts. You can pick out a very classy, useful and inexpensive basket at many department stores and thrift shops. Fill your baskets with items that the recipient can use. Think of their likes, dislikes and interest. Is this gift is for a person who likes to cook? Print out your favorite recipe on decorative card stock, assemble all the ingredients they will need to prepare the dish. Throw in a few decorative hand towels and oven mitts to match and there you have it a very thoughtful & personal gift straight from you.

The last advise I can give is not all about the gift, but more about what the gift comes in. Instead of spending money on fancy wrapping paper that will just get ripped up & tossed into the garbage, make your own decorative wrapping paper. This can add a very personal touch to your gift giving. Pick up a few rolls of brown or white craft paper. This can be found at local craft stores and the office supplies section of your local department store. This paper comes in long rolls and will only cost on average only four to five dollars a roll. You can decorate the paper with holiday stamps and stickers. You may also want to simply paint a special message or picture onto the present. To add a fun element to your project, write out a holiday phrase with a thin layer of glue, sprinkle glitter over the glue, shake the excess glitter off. Another way to decorate your gifts are by using modge podge. Modge podge is a clear glues like substance that can also be used to brush over something to give it a sealed laminated finish. It can be purchased at local craft stores and in some department stores. This product should only cost two to three dollars on the average. Search the Internet for fun holiday pictures or scenes, print them out, cut them down to size and modge podge them onto your plain boxes.

Wrap smaller gifts with fabric. You can search local fabric stores for small fabric squares that are usually found in the discount bins at low prices. After wrapping the gift with the fabric, tie a matching ribbon around it, add a few pieces of holiday greenery to the it and now you have a beautifully wrapped gift.

Remember to be creative and add personal touched to all your gifts. Your recipients are sure to adore and appreciate the effort and thoughtfulness you have put into your gifts. And just think of all the money you were able to save.

I just give everyone picture frames made from popsicle sticks & elbow macaroni. Sometimes I eat the macaroni off though.

Women love the gift baskets. If you "man" it up a bit, say with a good razor and some Axe sprays it might work for us husbands. Or use some kind of toolbox basket haha.
