Save Money by Making Home Your Favorite Restaurant

When most people think of being prepared for anything they think of harsh survival conditions. Caution is not just for extreme situations, though. Being prepared is the best way to keep the amount you spend under control. One prime way to curb spending is killing the dining out habit. Here are a few steps to help you break a fast food habit:

Make a list of your favorite restaurants and foods

The first step you should take is to make a list of your favorite restaurants. This will help you decide which recipes you will need to learn and what premade items to look out for at the supermarket. For each restaurant you place on your list write down what you usually have and any other dishes you like. If you are working with your family to cut the cost of dining out, have other family members make their own list of favorites so no one is left out at family dinners.

Collect recipes

A quick trip to your favorite search engine should provide you with copycat recipes for most chain restaurants, and it is worth checking for recipes from local restaurants. Create a file for recipes from each restaurant or cusine.

Learn to cook smart

If you are new to cooking, do some research and start small. Choose recipes with fewer ingredients and detailed instructions. Always read through your recipe before you begin and gather and premeasure your ingredients before you begin.

Whether you are a novice or an expert cook it is important to know which battles to fight in the kitchen. Be realistic when choosing what to make. Do not feel bad about picking up frozen convenience foods for parts of the meal; fast foods restaurants certainly do not. For instance, if you hate frying, or just do not want to waste the oil, pick up frozen fries. Picking up a rotissere chicken from the supermarket may be more expensive than roasting your own, but it still provides you with two to four servings of chicken at less than a restaurant would charge.

Keep perspective

The odd thing about fast food is it is not always fast. Once home, most people have to make a commute to restaurants. While it may seem easier to drive to a restaurant or to order in rather than cooking at home, it can take as much or more time after travel time and wait.

If you know you will be tempted to eat out, set a limit for how many times you allow yourself to eat out in a month and stick to it. While the habit of dining out should be kept in check, keep in mind there is nothing wrong with eating out on ocassion.
