Save Money by Making Your Own Foaming Hand Soap!

How to Save Money at Home with Soap

Tracy Howard
We love foaming hand soap at my house for a lot of reasons. It feels to me like the foaming hand soap works better, and a little goes a long way. I also have a child in the house, and children are notorious for using too much soap (so is my husband!). With the foaming cleanser, they get a handful of soap with just one pump, rather than the two or three pumps they would most likely use with liquid. So here's an easy solution, without buying a costly foaming soap dispenser. I'm going to show you how you can make one bottle of your favorite soap into several bottles of foaming soap!

You will need to buy one bottle (for each sink) of a foaming hand cleanser, like Bath and Body Works' Gentle Foaming Hand Soap. Use that soap up, of course. Save the bottles once they are empty.

Get some of whatever regular liquid hand soap that you like. I have maximized my savings on this by purchasing SoftSoap when it was on sale. I bought several bottles of Softsoap Naturals and Softsoap Antibacterial hand soap, the 7.5 oz size, on sale, for $1 each. So now I have a $1 bottle of liquid hand soap, and I'm going to turn that into $15-18 worth of soap (I generally pay about $3 per bottle at Bath and Body Works). Pour about 1 inch of liquid soap into the empty foaming cleanser bottle.

Next, very SLOWLY add water until the bottle is nearly full (leave a little room at the top). The soap will mix slightly better if the water is warm, but that's not necessary. Replace the cap. I let the mixture of warm water and soap sit for a minute before I mix.

Next, SLOWLY turn the bottle over, then upright again. Keep inverting the bottle 15 or 20 times. It's important that you do this step slowly as well. If you shake the bottle vigorously, all you will do is create a mass of suds inside the bottle.

Next, put it by the sink and use it! It's as simple as that! One 7.5 ounce bottle of liquid soap can fill 4 or 5 bottles of foaming cleanser! So with the $1 bottles of Softsoap, I've just saved about $17! Now if you really do just love the scents at your favorite boutique store, you can get them cheaper, because you can make one bottle go a lot further! I could buy liquid soap when they are on sale, 4 for $10, and make SIXTEEN bottles of foaming hand soap! That's only 62 cents a bottle!
