Save Money on Monthly Expenses by Creating a Budget

A Budget is an Important Tool for Every Family

Debbie H.
Payday is almost like a holiday these days. When a family receives money it's time to celebrate. Before splurging and spending all the money on unnecessary items, it's important to create a monthly budget. When a family has a monthly budget in place, you can rest assure that the bills will get paid for the month. After creating a budget a family will begin to see the savings account grow as well.

First Step: Write Down how Much Money Comes in Every Month

Calculate and put down how much income comes in each month. In this calculation, do not include monthly expenses, bonuses, or overtime. I will later explain what to do with this extra, irregular income.

Next Step: Make a List of all Expenses

Start out with expenses that stay the same every month. This may include the mortgage, car payment, loan payment, and student loans.

Estimate the expense for utilities. Depending on the season, the gas and electric bill will be more or less.

Write down the minimum payment for all credit cards. Hopefully later you will be able to increase the monthly payment, but at first just list the minimum payment.

Last Step: Subtract the Expenses from the Income

Hopefully after subtracting the expenses from the income, there will be money left over. Assuming there is money left over it is now time to decide what to do with the extra money.

Put Some Money in Savings for a Rainy Day

It is a good idea to try to save 2-3 months of your regular salary especially in this rocky economy. This money could be used for an unexpected job loss, a car repair, or unexpected house repair.

What to do With the Leftover Money

If credit card bills are piling up it would be wise to pay down those bills by paying by paying more than the minimum.

Making a monthly budget gives families a better idea of how much all the monthly expenses are. It's a great way to be able to save for upcoming events such as a wedding or vacation. Although monthly bills may change a little from month to month, it's a good idea to create a monthly budget to save money.
