Save Money when You Shop in Athens, Georgia

A Guide to the Thrift Stores

Beverly Miller
Athens, Georgia, has a unique culture and is made up of many kinds of people. One of the values that Athens holds is re-use of goods and items. The focus on reducing items that go into a landfill has lead to some great thrift and consignment stores. At any given time the used items stores have plenty of merchandise. At certain times of the year, such as when the students move out and get rid of unwanted items, you will find treasures if you know where to go.

Potter's House
434 Prince Ave
Athens, GA

The Potter's House is located within walking distance of downtown. The Potter's House has a little bit of everything, but this store is the place to shop for furniture and house wares. Their furniture is generally in good condition and available at reasonable prices.

Habitat for Humanity
532 Barber St
Athens, GA

Habitat for Humanity offers a wide variety of items to choose from. It is also within walking distance from downtown. They have many quality items of furniture as well as things that you may need that you can't find elsewhere, such as doors. If you want to do-it-yourself or have a home improvement project, check here first to save you money.

Goodwill
10 Huntington Rd
Athens, GA

Goodwill is the place to shop for clothes, shoes, and books. The clothing is divided by gender and kind, but not by size. This means that you have to search through three or four racks of women's jeans to find what you want. However, Goodwill is the place to find very gently used clothing as well as name brand clothing. Many of the students donate their clothes here, so you will often find a good pair of fifty dollar jeans for five dollars. Further, the selection is very large. If you want to reduce your clothing bill or find a few good books, shop here.

Plato's Closet
196 Alps Rd

Athens, GA

Plato's Closet is the place to go if you need something to go out in. Plato's Closet is more of a consignment shop than a thrift store, so many of the college students sell their gently used clothing here. The clothing prices are a bit higher than the other used items stores, but if you need something trendy to go downtown in, this is the place for you. The other great thing about this store is that it has many clothing accessories so that you can mix and match your outfits at a price that's very reasonable.

With all of these places to shop, you will be able to significantly reduce your spending and give many quality items a second chance. The stores are worth visiting and will never disappoint you. These stores will give you a way to save money, save the environment, and look good in the process!
